>that feel when you stopped reading in High School because the books weren't interesting enough, too easy for you, etc, and you missed out on a lot of great books.

Why have/did you stop reading?

>> No.1983552

I have to say, the excuse that the work is "too easy for you" has got to be the top bullshit excuse for why people are lazy in school.

>> No.1983554

I never read any of the French or Russian realists because I considered the genre too dreary, long-winded and heavy with description.

>> No.1983557

The thing about ignorance is you can't know how much you are missing.

>> No.1983559

Uh, I read in school to avoid paying attention to classes. So, no, I didn't miss on great books, but I did miss the order of the months and the order of the alphabet. Not to mention pretty much everything else.

I get the "It's not interesting" bit, since I passed on a few books, but I completely agree on the "too easy for me". Some book about Bean Trees, to kill a mockingbird, and Siddhartha. Anytime I ever see someone with Siddhartha, I make it a point to be a pretentious twat and point out that the book is a read for confused teens who lash out at Christianity for whatever reason.

I never stopped. This seems like a strange question to ask on /lit/ really.

I never stopped reading. If I did I would have killed myself, reading was the only thing I lived/live for.

This

Every single parent wants to believe their child doesn't do well because they are simply too smart. I did poorly in school cause I was a lazy fucking little shit.

As far as high school books.

God Tier:
The Things They Carried

High Tier:
Frankenstein, Hamlet, The Divine Comedy

Mid Tier:
Anything by Steinbeck, Any of the several historical novels about black people

Shit Tier:
The Great Gatsby, The Scarlet Letter

>> No.1983586

No I didn't

Though I took a break to recover from the piece of shit that is Siddhartha.

Fuck that book, the author hadn't even gone to India.

> mfw it was already one of my favorites

I'm really thankful for some the books I read in high school - I didn't ever even consider reading Frankenstein, oh boy but when I did, what a novel.

>> No.1983597

I never really liked English/American literature, and that was all we ever read, so I quickly skimmed through them all(they all had pretty basic story structures) while I read other books.

What country's/kind of literature do you like then?

Have any Bulgarian or Croatian lit recs? I'm going to be checking into Ivo Andrić and Miroslav Krleža soon, but I'd like to know more.

Or, honestly, any introductory recs for Slavic literature barring Czech, Polish and Russian, which I think I'm decently knowledgeable about already (but I wouldn't mind recs there either).
