It's basically that, but also a lot of speculation about paleolithic peoples and early humans. It's fertile ground for fantasy and even sci fi because it's a central question about the human condition: our origin, the difference between man and animal, language and metacognition, etc.

Hexarchate Stories, The Machineries of Empire - Yoon Ha Lee (2019)

Most of these stories are flash fiction and the author has written more flash fiction on his patreon. There are commentaries after each story. They're all interesting and provide a significant amount of insight into the author and his writing process. I admit to some mild disappointment, but that's only because I'm uninterested in various fandom matters, such as ao3 and tvtropes. They also confirmed a few other assumptions for me, such as that the author has autism and aphantasia. Knowing that helped with understanding the characters and the descriptions, among other peculiarities. For me that makes it all the more intriguing. I could've researched beforehand, but I almost never look up anything about the author before I read their work. I'm generally of the mind that the author and their works should remain separated, if for no other reason than the potential for disappointment. If anyone else had written this stories, I'd call them fanfiction, so instead I'll say they're mostly fanservice stories. This should be read after the trilogy, if only because it'll be more meaningful that way. I have a lot of other thoughts, but I'd prefer not to start rambling on.

Chameleon’s Gloves (2017)
This is a heist story that takes place at least 1,250 years before the trilogy. It features a weapon that causes destruction measured in lightyears. The story's connection to anything else is tenuous at best.
Ok

How the Andan Court (2012)
A poem featuring roses.
Blah

Seven Views of the Liozh Entrance Exam (2017)
Self-described by the author as a "gimmick flash story". The title is self-explanatory.

Meh

Honesty (2015)

Meh

Black Squirrels (2017)
A story about Jedao at school with a friend.
Meh

Silence (2019)
Another story about Jedao's family life told from the perspective of a sibling.
Meh

Extracurricular Activities (2017)
Jedao goes on an undercover caper to the Gwa Reality.
Ok

Gloves (2019)
Jedao has explicitly described gay BDSM sex on the receiving end with a prostitute at a brothel. I don't have anything against the content or how it's written, but if I'm going to read erotica, it isn't going to be like this.
Blah

Hunting Trip (2017)
Yet another story about Jedao with his family.
Meh

The Battle of Candle Arc (2012)
This was the first work I read from this author. Now that I've read the trilogy, it wasn't as interesting as I remembered or quite as enjoyable. The author notes that Ninefox Gambit was written before this story, which may at least partially account for why the second and third books in the trilogy were considerably different.
Ok

Calendrical Rot (2016)
Originally intended to be the prologue to Ninefox Gambit, but omitted.
Meh

Birthdays (2017)
A story about Cheris's childhood.
Meh

The Robot’s Math Lessons (2016)
A servitor meets Cheris as a child.
Meh

Sword-Shopping (2017)
Cheris goes lightsaber shopping with her girlfriend.
Ok

Persimmons (2017)
Servitor 135799 seeks out and prepares permissions while thinking of Cheris.
Meh

Irriz the Assassin-Cat (2017)
A family story about Zehun.
Meh

Vacation (2017)
Brezan on Vacation
Meh

Gamer’s End (2015)
Yes, both the title and story are based on Ender's Game. This was written in second person.
Ok

Glass Cannon (2019)
This novella was a sequel to the trilogy. More than anything else it reminded me of an expansion to a videogame. By that I mean it's primary purpose seemed to be for fanservice for those who already read everything and while not necessary at all still provides enjoyment. It's once again different from what came before, as this is basically a quest story. There was a lot that was highly questionable as symbolism, but I decided to instead just take it all at face value and not worry about that. The ending really sets up for more possible continuations, but I don't know if there would be any, aside from flash fiction. Finally the complete and utter obliviousness of basically every human in the series to the non-humans was addressed.
Enjoyable

Yeah, it's basically his only claim to fame/bread and butter. If you want, you can start with the Word/Void series that begins in modern times and work your way in from their or just start with the base Sword novels.

Armageddon's Children and it's sequels are the apocalyptic setting that changes the world, those were cool at the because it was speculation for years whether Shannara was the post apocalypse of the modern Word/Void series.

I generally skipped the Heritage books and went straight to the Voyage novels I jumped ship after the apocalypse arc was finally finished... I remember enjoying it a lot.

YMMV

Your problem is you're trying to read a slav author and their entire schtick is being dry, cerebral and dull. Personally I can't stand that type of fiction.
It's hard to give recommendations to people who don't know what they like, so I'll just throw shit at the wall here.
Try Cradle, by Will Wight (First book is titled Unsouled).
The Powder Mage series by Brian Mclellan.
The Undying Mercenaries series by B.V Larson.
The Curse of Chalion, by Lois McMaster Bujold.
The Penric series, also by Bujold.
Jurassic Park, by Michael Chrichton (it's very different to the Spielberg movie).
Storm Front, by Jim Butcher.

These are all easy to read and cover a very broad variety of genres, styles, and tones. If you don't like the style of one of them, just drop it and try something else. Once you have a better idea of what you're interested in then it's much easier to give recommendations.

If you want to read and find something you like to read, you'll find a way to make it work.
For me, an e-reader helped. I would load it books, start one, if it didn't got me, I chose another, until one sticks. More often than not, I return to one of the former ones after I'm done with that.
I can also read, put it down, and put it up all the time when I can go on again without having to open it first. It makes stuff easier.

I avoided The Diamond Age because I didn't think I'd like the main character but damn I was wrong. Even if it isn't really an action novel damn did it get me. I will now read your Baroque Cycle.

I'd also like to complain somewhat about about another novel I've just finished: Necroscope, by Brian Lumley. The basic premise is Cold War fiction, but there's supernatural shit like aliens, vampires, werewolves, psychics etc. MC and antagonist are similar opposites: both talk to the dead as a main source of power, one as a medium who befriends them and one as a necromancer who disembowels the bodies to gain their knowledge. Lumley did a good job of setting the two up as classically "good" and "bad" and squaring them away for confrontation at first. However, he decided to upgrade the characters and upgraded the necromancer way too far, and had to make the MC God to compensate. Necromancer becomes a vampire and necromances another psychic, then kills a KGB boss so at the time he must be confronted he is: supernaturally strong and fast, all knowledge of the vampires, shoots psychic killing bolts on a whim, big boss in KGB so all of that shit is wrapped up in a literal Siberian fortress. The MC responds to this by digging up a theoretical physicist who teaches the MC some math that somehow allows him to access a metaphysical slipstream and teleport anywhere, also, MC just learned he can raise the dead as well as commune with them. So he raises a bunch of zombie Tatars from 1000 years ago, teleports them to Siberia to kill Russians, and *teleports behind you*s the vampire with a fucking WoW Backstab. Roll credits. It was so good until the ending, I'm fucking mad.

If I would have bought the book and didn't like it, I'd either read it anyway and come to resent reading ,or put it aside and refrain from buying another one.
Like I wrote, I was struggling to read and still do at times, but for me, it helped. I think if you have any kind of condition that hampers your concentration or attention, you have to find the tricks that help you specifically. For me, it was making reading as acccessible and easy as possible.

Experiment with places to read, positions, try reading while drinking a mug of tea and taking a break when the mug is empty. See if a specific kind of light helps you, air the room beforehand, etc. For a time, I unironically wore welding glasses and ear plugs while sitting in a corner with the back towards the room to read without getting distracted. But don't force it. Maybe reading short stories at first gives you a sense of accomplishment that gives you some momentum.

It's a story about a felon who has just been released from prison for fraud, and he moves to Medicine Hat Alberta. He starts to squat in an old, dilapidated manor in the hopes of gaining employment and a place to live when the owner comes to check up on the house- but through an interesting set of coincidences, he finds that the house's deed is already in his name. The entire book is written as a series of letters from the Felon to his twin brother, his brother's wife, and his former cell-mate. It contains talking foxes, werewolves, dwarves, a serial killer, or maybe it contains none of that and the ol' felon Baxter is making it all up and gaslighting his brother. Solid book worth reading, it's a lot easier to get into than most of Wolfe's stuff.

>The series derives its name from the setting of the majority of the books, the Sector 12 General Hospital, a huge hospital space station located in deep space, designed to treat a wide variety of life forms with a wide range of ailments and life-support requirements, and to house an equally diverse staff. The Hospital was founded to promote peace after humanity's first interstellar war, and in the fourth book the authorities conclude that its emergency services are the most effective way to make peaceful contact with new species.

>In order to treat patients of other species, doctors must download into their brains "Educator tapes" containing the necessary medical knowledge, and these tapes also transmit the personalities of their donors. As a result, doctors have to struggle with the tastes imported from their donors, ranging from a dislike of their own species' normal food to sexual attraction for members of the donor's species. Other running gags include the acerbic tongue of the Chief Psychologist and one very senior non-human doctor's love of gossip, especially about the sexual behavior of other species.

For some reason this strikes me as horribly boring to read about but comfy and watchable as a television series.
