/ERG/ - E-Reader General #1
I think it's a good idea to have a general for e-readers. Please direct all your questions to this general

My question: how long should you wait to replace your e-reader? I swapped in my old kindle for a paperwhite (because of the light) about... 5 years ago, I think? By now even the basic kindles have light, but the paperwhites are nicer too. I'm not in a hurry, but a flush screen and audiobook support does sound nice...

SHOULD I GET AN E-READER?
>carry a lot of books with you
>e-ink screen is better for your eyes
>read in the dark
>change font and font size
>never pay for a book again

WHICH E-READER SHOULD I GET?

I have a 2019 basic Kindle... But I find it a little cheap and slow, would it be "consooming" to buy a newer one ? Also which brand, because I hesitate between Kobo and Pocketbook ?

I've bought a Tolino Vision 5 last year and it really helped me get back into reading again. No idea when was the last time I've read so much. The light really helps, because I usually lie on the floor in dim light. Reading books was always a hassle.
I think the Tolinos are basically Kobos, but I don't know which model is the equivalent.
No idea for what I should use Calibre, I just put the books into various folders.

there's an in-depth comparison site in the OP, but the Pocketbook is the sony one, right? I was interested that because you can put in an extra sd card for space, but that's just overkill.

>>19831869
Color is always fun, but I want to wait until it has more of a market presence, so it's not an excuse to jack the prices. And, if it's anything like what it's like to read comics on a kindle, I'm not that interested. It was this entire project to get comics not get all chopped to shit.

I have had four kobos, currently I own Kobo Libra 2 and Sage. Yes, I'm a consoomer, suck it poorfags.

Libra H20 (7 inch): Pretty decent, slightly uneven backlight. Somewhat clunky buttons.

Forma (8 inch): Horribly uneven backlight, apparently very common with this model. Gave this piece of shit to a family memeber.

Libra 2 (7 inch): Excellent backlight, good battery, solid build. A good choice. USB 3.

Sage (8 inch): Good backlight, but some uneven light at the corners. Also smaller battery than Libra 2, doesn't last that long. USB 3.

Why the hell do you keep buying kobos if they have such shitty lighting?

>> No.19831918

>>19831902
It doesn't bother everyone and from what I have seen the lightning issue is in most e-ink displays from all manufacturers. I'm just seem to be more sensitive.

I mean yeah, it's your choice, I just don't understand the loyalty. I would have jumped ship after the Forma.

Buy secondhand Kindle.
Screen keeps freezing, the screen still updates but it can't be controlled.
Factory reset, reset firmware, read every forum post on every website in the world trying to fix it.
Still keeps freezing. Touchscreens were a mistake.

>> No.19831959

A lot of the competitors aren't that much better, everyone has to buy their e-ink displays from the same monopoly jews until the patents expire (that's why they also cost so much despite being pretty shitty tech) and do their own hacks on top of it.

Kobo is also one of the more open platforms, you can install koreader and other stuff and just shovel files into the device memory with not DRM.

does it freeze all the time, or just on occasion? I've had my kindle freeze on me a couple times, but I soft reset it and it was fine after that.

>> No.19832000

My advice to anyone is to get a reader with buttons, huge comfort increase.

>> No.19832111

>>19831989
All the time. Opening the screen brightness menu freezes it.
If you open the web browser on it, it freezes so badly that you have to hard reset it. Presumably it has a hardware fault. The Kindle works but the screen touch detection is fucked, I think.

the best part about having an e-read is that I can just comfortably pirate books so I don't have to support authors in their """jobs""".

Yeah, Tolino is the e-reader of several bookstore chains that got together. It's basically Kobo, but rebranded. And both is Rakuten.

Just here to shill Hisense e-ink phones again.
>Why?
More awareness more demand more choice

>> No.19833312

>>19832933
Yeah, Libra 2 is basically the new and improved version (more memory, bluetooth and audio books, USB C etc.). A bit heavier too, but nothing bad. But the H20 is pretty good too if you can get it a lot cheaper.

Doesn't the e-ink screen delay make using that awful? Hard to imagine browsing internet with that. Or using any app that is not explicitly designed for e-ink.

>> No.19833362

>>19833330
On the A6 there are two display modes you can set per app, smooth or clear. Smooth mode prioritizes frame rate, but leaves some traces/shadow of the previous frames. Clear mode prioritizes clarity over speed, with the full-screen refresh you're used to on ereaders, so that one is unusable for regular browsing but good for ebooks or comics.

>> No.19833551

I've been using a Kobo Glo HD for 6 years. It's been a good dependable ereader but I've noticed that the battery has started draining faster recently. If that gets worse I'll probably buy a Libra 2 to replace it.
