A colleague invited me over for dinner and I noticed he had War and Peace on his bookshelf. I've read the summary & analysis of that book and so I told him I really enjoyed how the novel showed the contrast between the European & Russian culture. He loved that I had read it and shared his favorite moments of the novel, with me nodding and borrowing commentary from that summary. By the end of the dinner after a couple of drinks he said he'd recommend me for a promotion. All this because I spent half an hour reading a summary, while this idiot probably spent countless hours reading it. Really goes to show you how worthless fiction is.

I have read up to book four. Or rather a translation with extraordinarily simple prose. This book instilled in me an aversion to reading translations from their native tongue. While I can appreciate Tolstoy's ambition in writing this tome, the resulting literary soap opera carries many of the dramatic failings that imbue the modern genre.
