Mostly just bumping because interested but James Ellroy's Underworld USA trilogy takes place from 1959 to 1971 and has a lot of espionage elements, bay of pigs, vietnam, stuff like that. But the books are more crime-oriented than military-focused. It's meant to paint a very realistic alternate history of the 60s, so there's no sci-fi elements to it. But I definitely think there's some good mgs3/peace walker vibes to be found.
