Only place I really have available is op shops and a local used book store, everywhere else is kind of awful
The local used book store is quite expensive too, a new penguin book will cost you $10 used
I'm so jealous of Americans with their online used book stores but even with the shipping being near the entire cost of the order sometimes it's worth it

I recently purchased The Castle by Kafka and inside a girl had scribbled all sorts of horrible annotations like "metaphor for God?", "Existential Horror", and "Is K. An Atheist?"
My fear is that when I die and my estate is distributed, my literary reputation; which will at that point be stellar, will simply plummet, and I will become the butt of many many highbrow and lowbrow jokes.
Should I throw the book away?

Used books are essential if you want to build an impressive shelf fast. Nothing says "parvenu tryhard" like a shelf full of pristine modern edition classics. Your Homer and Malory and Montaigne and Sterne should be old and battered as though you inherited them from your grandfather and have read and re-read them a dozen times over the past twenty years.

They throw out all of the old books and obscure literature. They usually only stock best-sellers, self-help, cooking and common classics for college students. If you want a chance at the good stuff, you have to volunteer at the shop. It's a fun job.

I don't. I'm in a very unliterary area so I'm sifting through a whole bunch of crime fiction, Oprah's book club/NYT best sellers and Obama biographies. The few times I've bought some online they either had a weird smell, were kind of yellowed or had stupid annotations. It's not a huge extravagance for me to buy 3-4 new books a month over used, I'd rather have nice things than someones tatty leftovers.

That's a retarded sentiment. All those old used copies were new at some point. Do you really need someone else's hand-me-downs to make yourself look more impressive and well read? I have lived in several places. Here in LA I generally go to Skylight books. It's kind of too hipster but they have a nice selection of books in foreign languages.

The last bookstore in downtown has a similar issue, although it's bigger.

I used to live in the bay area before and in San jose they have this place called recycle bookstore. Really nice place, kinda messy but full of great gems and old books. City lights was cool to take dates there more than to buy books (it's where Ginsberg and the Beat generation people hanged around and published some of their major works).

When I used to live in Spain I would buy books in Libros Alcana in Madrid or any of the old bookstores in El Barrio de las Letras (and occasionally at Fnac or El Corte inglés)
