The thing about a book like this is that most people on /lit/ read it in highschool.

You know what happens when people on /lit/ read books?
A) If it is well known, they will call it terrible.
B) If it is slightly obscure, they will talk about how amazing it is.

/lit/ is the worst place to ask for serious discussion on a well known book (and it is well known and widely taught for a reason - not because it's bad).

And yeah, do your own homework.

A hearty endorsement over here. Catcher is a great book, with some worthwhile sentiments... Until South Park came along.

>> No.1980505

Really great book, but much better if you read it while you're an angry teen.

>> No.1980514

I didn't enjoy it when I read it in high school, but I can still respect it for what it is. It does bug me a bit when someone says it's their favorite book, though. I guess I just see it as a sign of immaturity to still identify with Holden when you're in your mid-twenties.

>> No.1980517

Everyone is immature in their twenties. If you think you're the exception, you're kidding yourself.

>> No.1980525

Holden's brother dies, Holden starts dropping out of schools, he finally spends a few crazy nights in New York City where he talks to a bunch of ugly broads and almost fucks a prostitute but chickens out, then he goes back to his house and says hello to his sister, then he goes to his ex-teacher's house where he tries to molest him(or maybe he doesn't who knows), then some other stuff happens, then he sees a psychiatrist or something I don't know. The moral of the story is if you blame yourself for your brother's death, you get molested and talk in stream-of-consciousness prose.

There, that should give you at least a 60% on the test.

It pisses me off so much when people think the teacher is trying to molest him. He's sympathizing with him and the struggle he's going through. He's petting his head the way a parent would a sleeping child.

Adults usually use situations like that as an opportunity to be "sensitive" so they can lure young people into being molested. I've seen this with adult males and female children/teens, but it also very often happens when there is a homosexual adult authority figure involved.
The teacher is only trying to "comfort" Holden to take advantage of him.

That it does not, darling. Do a little reading, since you like that sort of thing: http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/facts_molestation.html

You will be delighted to know that upset children make many adults sad. Many adults react to sad children in a way they hope will make the child less sad. This is normal, common, and healthy, and you are an asshole.

For a female adult, yes, since females are supposed to be naturally sensitive and caring. However, if a male adult acts this way it's only natural to be suspicious of his intentions. That is a very big red flag.

>If you think only women are supposed to be caring and nurturing... you are clearly retarded.

You've never met a woman, have you? If you don't believe that women are naturally more sensitive than men it is only because you have bought political correctness propaganda hook, line and sinker. All I am saying is that your ideas are clearly misguided and not based on actual life experience.

As for my father, my father never beat me. I did get a few beltings when I was young but my father was a good, tough man who taught me how to stand up for myself and be a responsible, independent man. Unfortunately this form of parenting is all too rare in a society that encourages emotional weakness ("sensitivity") in the male gender.

Alright. For the thousandth Catcher in the Rye thread, I'll post something new.
This book right here, Highlights of the Off Season, is the EXACT same, fucking exact, to the voice of Holden in Catcher in the Rye.
I don't know how the fuck the author managed to write an entire 300+ page novel that mimics CITR so wholly but... it does.

It's like an updated version set in the 1960's. But still so fucking similar.

You see this? You could be some beta male tourist in one of these cities or some beta male expat teaching English to little Thai kids and Bangkok and the moment you stepped out of your car you could get gang-raped and mugged because of how fucking beta you are. That's because you're not alpha enough to protect yourself or others. That is the very definition of a beta male. It is scary to me that females have such a fixation on this homosexual-inspired beta male culture (just look at TV shows like Glee that encourage this sickening level of effeminacy)

>> No.1982756

I never had to read this book for school. Instead, my English teachers swooned over such works as "The Scarlet Letter" and "The Color Purple." Two of the worst books ever written in my opinion. I swear, the prose in "Purple" is undecipherable and "Letter" is boring as all hell. Goddamn feminists running the schools ruined literature for me. But now that I'm 23, I read whatever the hell I want and I'm very happy now.

OP, do your own homework.

>> No.1982761

The sickening thing about this to me is that totalitarian airport security measures mean it is impossible to carry a firearm in your luggage, either carry (helpful to protect from a terrorist attack - imagine how many lives could have been saved on 9/11 if an alpha male with a gun had stood up to Islamofascism) or stow. It is exactly because of these sickening measures that American tourists, businessmen, expatriate workers are regularly murdered, raped and mugged while overseas.

Thing is, they kind of have to go out of their way to expose you to female authors since classic literature is pretty much dominated by white men.

That being said, there are a lot better choices that what they usually pick. Emily Dickinson, for instance.
