which is fine for its purpose. the target audience is normalfags and there aren't many books aimed at that public with the moral that life is basically "learn how to suffer".

I've been very depressed recently and my dad keeps urging me to read this book because he thinks it will help. He has very little experience with both reading and mental health. Should I take his advice?

I hate those types of books with a passion. Look at The Daily Stoic - a book that takes a quote from someone like Seneca, adds some gay description on what it means and puffs it up with some modern-CEO-wakeupat5am-tranny's story. All the while the works of stoics are readily available and easy to understand.

Does seeing Seneca - On The Shortness of Life scare the public so much? The translations are modern, it's not hard to understand the meaning, the prose is beautifully concise and accurate. Why do people insist on reading (and posting on social media) that watered-down plagiaristic garbage?

Couldn’t hurt. You don’t know me but I read a lot and was healed of depression. My advice is read the New Testament like a self help book and childishly obey everything it says. Worked for me, I became saved and slowly overtime my mental health as improved dramatically without medicine. I used to have so much anxiety I would stay up for days because I was scared I was going to die in my sleep, I would have three intense panic attacks a day, I abused opiates to deal with it all. Now I’m sober, haven’t had a panic attack in two years, I sleep like a dead man, and I am generally at peace because of Gods work in me. So yeah you probabaly know the Bible and Jesus and the gospel but I just popped in to say that little bit

I've been trying to get into stoicism but I'm not reading some old philosopher nerd's book from a different time period.

I'm sure Seneca's works were relevant to his contemporaries, but I live almost 2000 years later and it's a "historic" text. I don't want a historic text--I want a manual for stoicism.

I thought It was alright. I read it during a time where my state of mind was the kind that the book targeted. I thought the ideas and their reasoning made sense, mainly because they're based on stoicism, which, if you really wanted to benefit from that philosophy, would be far more beneficial just to read classical works that stoicism is based on, like Seneca or Marcus Aurelius to name a couple. It's obviously a meme at this point, but I think you could extract value some despite it's meme status. But it'd be far more rewarded just to read the classical works instead

You haven't read Seneca then. I was honestly confused as to how old the writings were; if Seneca didn't mention toga's and gladiators once in a while, I'd pass it as almost contemporary (18-20th century) work.

Honestly I do, but >>19797704 has changed my mind a bit and I might order the books.

It's a similar issue I have with Victorian literature: at what point do you 'update' it? People reading it at the time weren't reading 'old-fashioned' language, and my brain has smoothened in adulthood.

Can probably stomach the occasional toga reference, thanks anon.
