Why is Conan always shocked when he sees a giant snake despite fighting them literally every day?

>> No.19780382

Because it's a giant fucking snake, do you think you get an acquired taste for them or something

>> No.19780456

Because there's no established chronology to the Conan stories, so every giant snake encounter could in theory be his first one.

If you killed a surprise python in your bathroom, would you be less surprised the next time a python suddenly shows up in your bathroom?

I love this

>> No.19781461

Most of those giant snakes are the spawn of an eldritch entity, and have an aura of supernatural fear.

Conan has just seen so much that he is only surprised, instead of cowering and out of his mind.

>> No.19781694

Do you really feel glad to face giant snakes every day?

>> No.19781810

Howard wrote every story so that it could be the first one you ever read without need of a backstory.

Actually, he has brain damage from getting hit in the head and that has adversely affected his memory and cognition

Like old comics, they're written on an assumption that every story might be the reader's first Conan story.

It's very telling that once this stopped being the norm at Marvel and DC, that's when comics started to decline in mass market popularity.
