How do I learn to appreciate poetry?

>> No.19751427

>>19751237
Learn the basics of rhyme and meter so you don't embarrass yourself and watch others embarrass themselves in myriad ways. Limericks and bawdy ballads are a good start before you try to pretend even the gravest shit is serious. If you can't have a chuckle, you're fucked.

it doesn't look safe
cute bunnies are going to die
probably they will be eaten by a wolf or some other predator

listening to poetry read aloud may give you a feel for the way the iambic foot is constructed.
For great clear poetry try following some of the classic's : Pope and Swift are quite easy to read and A Description of a City Shower was, i remember, my first foray into proper verse.

> A Description of a City Shower was
i just had another look at it and it's not as easy as i remember, but Swift's Helter Skelter is, so maybe start with that.

Anyway, OP, read poetry aloud. It makes you understand the meter, etc.

What dangers lurk in lagomorph hearts,
To summon a protector without delay.
Nameless, indeed, their savior thou art,
An unknown defender of bunnies, hurray!

Read it out loud and read it several times. Poetry doesn't really work inside your head.

I like this poem. At first you start to read, and it looks like a normal cutepost about bunnies, but at the end, it tells you that there is something more to these bunnies than just being cute, they are dreaming of something. Something that's important to them. They have hope for a new world.

I feel that the majority of poetry is overly sensuous and sentimental. Is there any poetry that appeals exclusively to the intellect?

Does anyone else know this mental illness we're you become very emotional with regards to things like this, basically cute, naive, innocent and precious things being happy and safe, etc and the prospect of those things being harmed or hurt really upsets you but at the same time, you have constant intrusive thoughts about all the ways that the cute, naive, innocent and precious things could be hurt, the way the bunnies would be torn about by a fox as the mother rabbit is screaming and terrified, basically catatonic while trapped in a corner of the burrow, the child whose birthday is coming up and she loves her parents and doesn't want to ask for too much despite her parents offering a lot and simply asks them to buy her a toy rabbit and they end up dying in a car accident on the way to pick it up for her the day before her birthday, freak accidents in general torment me, the mother whose infant son drowns in a pool
I wish I wasn't like this, I had a father who killed himself when I was 14 and it came out of the blue for me but I was a sick fuck already by then and so it wasn't as if I was innocent and naive so I don't really see it as a connection

Good poetry has you appreciating every word in each line as it carries purpose that can be rediscovered several times.

Read it literally.

Read it in the way you think the author intended.

Read it in the way you would only off your experiences.

Majority of poetry is grueling for entertainment because even the most empathetic person can't relate to every shared experience written but when you do find something that interests you whether it's about a drug addict's recovery, the scenery of Dixie, or about someone's muse it finally clicks and you'll appreciate it.

That's because it is lol. All art is emotional obfuscation of the point for its own sake. This appeals to a lot of people. In that, it isn't really the domain for intellectual framework.
