How to subvert a nation 101

>> No.19746045

Reading it right now, loving it. I just read the chapter that was rejected by the editor this morning. I love how Dostoevsky writes dialogue, every conversation is intense and engaging, like a duel. People are always flying at each other or 'turning purple' and getting faint or dizzy and clenching and sweating.

It gets slow. Real thing doesn't start until 200-250 page

I am well beyond that. The 'slow' parts are great too.

Be Honest--did this book originally become such a meme on here because of Jordan Peterson?

I don't think Demons is a meme. It only gets discussed every once in awhile. It just happens that several anons decided to read it at the same time so there have been a couple of threads lately. If anything, I'd say the book is just very relevant to current times. I don't think this book would have nearly as much meaning to the average European/American reader 20 years ago as it does today. Now we see acquaintances from our youths on social media becoming radicals, just as we see old liberals turn harder to the left in order to keep up with current ideas and maintain relevance. The book could practically be set in the 2020s, maybe in some small town outside of Portland, and still more or less make sense. The insight still rings very true.

This
Berlin Alexanderplatz was pretty popular around here a couple years ago.
Part of it was because of a new translation and part of it was we were seeing brownshirts and commies brawling in the streets and 9 year olds were transitioning or twerking at gay pride parades.
Unfortunately we live in interesting times.

A little tangent -- the Russian movie adaptation (available on Yewtube) has excellent casting. Gave me a vivid picture of the characters as I read the book.

Are there any good books of Russia set around 1880-1905 as things were getting even worse?

The Michael R. Katz translation is really good. Also has a bunch of useful notes and the rejected chapter mentioned earlier in the thread.

Russia wasn't necessarily getting worse in that period, unless you mean industrialization and the 1905 revolution. If mean by getting worse you mean the Russian revolution, that was in 1917 and the "getting worse" period was the First World War

Stavrogin is particularly well casted. Pyotr as well. Stepan was a little different from what I had in my head.

>>19750619
The War was honestly a wet dream for these revolutionary types, going by Pyotr's plan of action. Cause chaos, destroy the sense of honor, shake the foundations of society so it can be remade. Nicholas II literally did all the hard work for him.
