Why is it that despite both analyzing and discussing similar problems, one is (relatively) well known, and the other is more or less obscure? In fact, Ted K was hardly the first or the only thinker to address the Technology Problem, and yet none of the handful of other authors who wrote about it are known outside of a small niche.

Do you think Ted K's writings would have experienced such infamy and popularity if he hadn't committed his crimes? Or perhaps his writing had something that resonated with readers, some quality that other writings on the same subject lacked?

Is marketing more important than actual content?

Ellul is not that obscure here in France. I've encountered his name fairly often.

Obviously not.
>Is marketing more important than actual content?
When you're trying to tell people something they absolutely do not want to hear, you will be dismissed unless you force people to pay attention. As much as people like to complain about technology today, 1. things were very different in that department even 10 years ago, and 2. nobody actually desires to try to do anything addressing the underlying problem (that technological development itself causes these problems, and not just bad guys running the system).

OP you remind me of my sweet innocent self when I was like 12 years old. I thought: I will go to university and study (subject). Then I will contribute to (subject) and I will be up there with great thinkers who are household names.

Lolnope that isn't how it works.

>Is marketing more important than actual content?

Not only is marketing more important, the actual content doesn't even matter. You could literally spout random jibberish and be hailed as Derrida's successor if you've got a good enough PR department

just because ted is well known does not mean his ideas are widely read and understood. most of the people that pick up his books are just edgy teens anyway that aren't really interested in the content/philosophy. sort of like wearing a che guevara t shirt. i am not a believer in all press is good press where it is all about the views. I think ted has done more harm than good to his ideas, and partially discredited them in the public's eye.
