Even within a story about a modern family it's schematic (I mean cliched) and uninsightful. Could've been so much more but the guy doesn't know fuck all about anything except how to write a novel, just like a journalist knows how to write an article but little about the issues he's covering or an MBA can spreadsheet a business plan but knows nothing about how to create a useful product.

Freedom was way better. Only good parts of The Corrections were chapters about Gary's depression. It was very well done, many books don't take into account paranoia that depression causes and it was done so well in this book. Ending was also good where demented Alfred tried to kill himself every time he was lucid enough.
