Why did I love this so much?

It’s well written. It doesn’t rely on having an exciting setting or a remarkable protagonist, it has emotional intelligence, realism, conflict of a relatable nature, and real pathos

IMO it is very well paced, the longest chapter is the oral exam with Walker, which is the most dramatic, and everything after that just continues to crank up the emotions and empathy for Stoner, and the continued sacrifices he has to make and suffering he has to endure.

It doesn't risk being too long (under 300 pages) or too lyrical. It is mostly plain but skillfully written with occasional paragraphs that are like a gut punch, usually well positioned either at the beginning or end of a chapter.

Also it's unambitious-ness actually circles back around to an ambitious work, like Madame Bovary, it's a novel about nothing, but really its about experiences almost every person can relate to, empathize with, and see parts of themselves in. It takes a great writer to tell you on the first page, "this guy is unremarkable, no one is gonna remember him, also if you're wondering how it ends, he dies." You wonder, well then what is this gonna be about then?

This bitch gives me the same vibes as Edith. She's just into books instead of playing piano or whatever hobby she got afterwards. Bros, will I be miserable if I marry Emmie? But she's so beautiful.

Bro, I just don't want to marry a woman that makes me unhappy, but Emmie is so beautiful. She won't be like that, right? Sometimes I get the feeling she only cares about status and looking sophisticated. But she's so beautiful.

Why are you being so rude? I think you haven't seen enough Emmie videos or else you would understand my dilemma. I just don't know if she would make a good wife or not. She's everything I look for in a woman, but at the same time there's something fake about her, but maybe I'm just projecting my own insecurities. I do that a lot.

I'm sorry, anon, but she's a pseud. She doesn't even read books. She only buys them as decoration, but she has said, with no shame, that she mostly listens to audio books.

I loved this book as well. What are some others like it?

Damn. Emmie keeps getting cuter. That haircut fits her so well.

Yeah, I read it in early 2020 and it is one of the few books to make me tear up. I wish I had more to say, but I believe the clarity with which John Williams writes brings a rhythm to a novel that should be a drone. I'm due a reread.

I remember reading that Williams claimed to be a heir of Flaubert, so check him out if the prose style is what caught you.

anything specific from this "flaubert" I should read?

Lucky for you, a /lit/ chart exists to answer this question

The pacing was great, the story was somewhat relatable, the MC wasn't retarded and, if I may pull a Waldun, the proses flowed. There was nothing overly complex about the prose but it had just the right amount of "complex" words and was just concise enough to feel fresh.

Didn't see get a concussion or some other head injury which makes her vision blur.
Also she actually reads and talks about good books unlike the constant deluge of ya and fantasy that everyone else on that godforsaken platform goes on about.
I'm inclined to believe she's genuine and her videos are relaxing to watch.
