I feel like it’s caused nothing but problems for me. I know there’s a big emphasis on forgetting yourself in Buddhism but where else?

Try Nietzsche. He explores transcendence of ego in Birth of a Tragedy but keep in mind that the categories of objectivity and subjectivity he uses were later dismissed by him; for that matter you may want to check out Will to Power. That one will also probably offer some insight into your "I feel like it’s caused nothing but problems for me" ressentiment.

Twilight of the Idols is in a way a brief summary of his views, and since he made it in his late period it also presents his philosophy, though superficially, through more or less the same lenses he viewed it in the end. I guess some secondary articles on Nietzsche's perspectivism will also clear things up.
