How much does one have to know grammar/linguistics to become a literary critic?

>> No.19708319

You must know Latin at a bare minimum. It gives you a solid foundation in linguistics and grammar.

The basics. If you finished high school with decent grades you should already be there language wise.

Depends, there are two fields which this could refer too, one is the exploration of literary ideas, the other is validating ones opinion in a public forum. The former does not exactly demand a knowledge of grammar but you will not get far in it without a good grasp on the descriptive and language in general. The latter requires nothing beyond the willingness to do it but have decent grammar will still help.
