1970079 No.1970079 [Reply] [Original]

Hello, /lit/. In my Junior year of highschool, I wrote a comparison essay between the books "Their Eyes Were Watching God" and "The Great Gatsby." I didn't know what to write about, so my AP English 11 teacher told me to write about why they didn't interest me (I know, fuck me). So, in response, I wrote what I believed to be a funny little paper the day said paper was due (I typed it out on my iPod Touch during class). It's not quite a satire, not quite a farce, just me being humorous. I got a 99% on it, the highest of the three A's for that paper. Wow. I'm posting it below, tell me what you think.
It's a rough draft, so there will be mistakes, but nothing to detract from the wonderful reading experience (hopefully).

I had many teachers and classmates laugh about it, though in retrospect it's not THAT humorous. As far as satire goes, I've had several classmates and a teacher call it one so I dunno anymore.

>wrote it on ipod touch
LOLOL WOLOLO

Completely unresearched, from the looks of it very short, and full of purely opinions. You don't even attempt to properly analyse the texts and suggest WHY you don't think they're worth anything, you just spend the whole essay deriding them because you just don't like them.
I assume you went to a terrible high school with a very low standard and scored 99 because you knew how to use spell check and a thesaurus/dictionary properly.

I wrote this in Junior year in English.

Supposed to be vignettes about our life like in House on Mango Street. It was the end of the year, I had a solid B so this assignment wouldn't change my grade either way, and it was the first time they gave us free reign to do actual creative writing since kindergarten so I decided to fuck it and have some fun.

There were 5 but this is my favorite one:
>Angsty Epiphanies of an Automobile & Explosion Fueled Mind
They tell you how it's a doggy dog world out there, that life isn't a fair but I don't buy it. If that were true we'd olive offed ourselves aways back. I don't think it's all candy and apples, but these guys, they just don't want you to take your fair share of life's fare. The real dogs in this world, that's what they're. Nasty things, who bite without the bark. Snap with no snarl. I before E except after C. Sure it works for receive but what about ----? I think it's just their way to get your head out of the game. If they trip you down then by definition they get to move up. It's all supply and demand. Well I'm done supplying, it's about time I began with the demanding. So I'm offing a hostage each hour until you supply me with a heli and a speedboat so I can get the heck off of this sinking ship with a crash course headed straight to hell. They say television rots the brains but then that just means I'll be the last one eaten when the zombies arrive, just some food for thought.

no don't worry i like you and although i didn't read your essay i think it was a good fresh take on something that is usually so formal and allows very little room for creativity.
you were infusing the 21st century technology and books that were written well before your time, making use of the benefits of both new technology, and the lessons that can be learned from reading such literature.

well done.

I liked
>themes of racism and sexism run through them like wildebeests through the Serengeti.

Could've had more lines like that.
Could've been written a bit stupider.
The "Second, how does lightning kill someone" part was a bit silly, since it's not that farfetched to have thunder kill someone. You should've "cited" a study saying only 3 people are hit by lightning a year and only .5 suffer fatal injury, or something like that.

I'm not sure how you got a good score, it wasn't extremely clever, funny or well written. Still alright though. Rambled a lot, not sure what your school taught but mine would've never accepted that essay format. CD's and commentary were all over the place.

It's shitty. It's just your amateur opinion about literatur. Either you're very naive or a christian fundamentalist for trying to refrain from any work that contains a resemblance to lavish & lascivious symbolisms or analogies.
Fitzgerald doesn't refer to anything, the persona in the text does, for christ's sake. Stop thinking author and narrator are the same thing.
Also, it's fun how you derisively call someone a Fuhrer and then afterwards you peremptorily demands that the book must be thrown out of our libraries and burned.
