Not that elective of a school. Its fantastic for its research and etc. but admissions aren't as selective as American elite schools. For example, Cambridge accepted nearly a third of its applicants vs. Harvard which accepts 7%.

Competitiveness for undergrads probably rank in the Top 15 of American schools due to the population differences primarily.

no not at all, my buddy just transferred recently from a Baptist school to Stanford. We are both doing premed and entering our junior year this semester, he transfered midway last year. Whereas before at the Baptist school we were clocking in 36 hours of studying per test for Ochem , he now is able to slide by with 5 or so hours of studying. Genetics and Developmental Biology was a joke he said and his gen eds are the same. Basically he gets A's now for half the effort. Well thankfully we don't have a test every week. But on average, including lectures, I would say about 80 hours. Some weeks are easier some are harder.

Finals week was hell last semester though, OChem 2, Genetics, D-Bio, Latin II, Calc, I added it up that week specifically because I thought it was absurd how much we were required to study. In the span on 1 week we spent 112 hours studying. Mostly for Ochem 2 then for Genetics and D Bio. It paid off though aced everything but Ochem, but I still ended up with an A- as my final grade so it wasn't that bad.

BUt protip for the future never ask premeds how much they study or things like that, we love to bitch and complain, so once you ask it will be hard to shut them back up

That's pretty insane. Over here the national average in med school is like 32 hours per week. I make do with significantly less and get good grades. From what I understand that study material is the same in USA and over here.

It's odd that in the end the difference in skill between American and European doctors isn't that great. Not that I deny that Harvard doctors weren't the best, but still.

wtf 32 hours for medical school !?!?! surely you jest. I'm just in pre-med, medical school will be infinitely worse. Granted I had an especially hard year last year, but even on the easier years it was around 60 hours a week.

In America, the 4 years of undergrads is mostly to weed out those who wouldn't last in medical school. we learn a shit ton of science but most of it is not very practical for a doctor to know.

Meical school has gotten better in recent decades though. Medical school used to be like a Monastery, living and breathing the material. Residency used to be 100 hour workweeks, but within the last 15 years or so it has been cut down to 80 hours for safety reasons.

The study material is clearly not the same if people only to to spend 32 hours studying each week. But that probably isn't normal my father's business partner originally got his medical license in Spain and it was a pretty similar experience, ~80 -100 hour weeks for med school and then 80 hour weeks for residency. He had to go through residency again when he came to America to practice and it was the same level of material and same time commitment he said, it was a residency for neurology so 4 years.

If 32 hours of studying is adequate to graduate medical school I would question the credentials of the medical school.

pffft 32 hours a week for medical school. If you are being serious I will never again trust whatever country you are form for anything medical related.
I'm not the guy you are responding to but I was on the Med school route the switched to trying to get a Phd in pathology because I actually wanted to have a life.

There is a reason med students spend so much time studying, they aren't dicking around, and I know for a fact that at least in England they spend almost as much time studying in med schools America because I was considering going there instead of the US.

In reality I suspect you may be embellishing, that or the stereotype of European doctors being lazy is based off of some truth after all.

The quality of medical care in my country is amongst the very top in the world. I live in a Nordic country. Our doctors are very good, many top athletes in the world come here to get surgery. It's interesting they don't go to USA to get treated by Harvard alumni.

I don't know how exactly our teaching techniques differ. Perhaps we simply take a bit longer to go through med school? Med school here is 6 years and you go there right after high school (our high school is roughly your prep school). We don't have colleges in our country.

Weird. Just one another thing I can think of is that perhaps we just spend less time on rote memorization? The emphasis here is on understanding.

please ignore the other guy he was pretty rude.

We have 6 year programs for right out if high school as well, but they are generally looked down upon and not demanding enough. The main plus of going to those is it is 2 years shorter and you don't have to take the dreaded MCAT.

Unfortunately there is a LOT of superfluous information we are required to memorize in both med school and undergrad. Conceptes and understanding are usually done with by the sophomore year do undergrad in terms of biology, anatomy, and physiology from that point on it is havin extensive and meticulous knowledge of everything. Memorization takes up about half of the curriculum. The other half is more conceptual, but still not very relevant to actually practicing medicine other than being able to understand how every drug works down to the molecular level (which is unnecessary but still essentially required)

But we do actually have the highest amount of medical conditions that come to the US over any other country in the world, however we are pretty big so that is to be expected. John Hopkins and Mayo are the two best here.

I think most of it has to do with the people in charge are still hellbent on making medical school and the process of becoming a doctors as hard as possible because it is the way things have always been done. You should have seen the uproar from the medical elite when new laws were implemented limiting Residency to 80 hour workweeks instead of the 100+ hour workweeks. I am sure in 50 years the process will be much easier in the US as well, but for now the old farts in charge of everything pride themselves of testing the students in fire.

And of course, now in America malpractice insurance is costing more and more, on average just over 1/4th of your salary to practice and that's on top of the extra taxes. (Although I probably should not complain to a European about taxes we have it pretty easy compared to most of you guys) It's a labor of love

Hmm. I don't know. All my text books are in English. Books like Textbook of Medical Physiology by Guyton & Hall, Gray's Anatomy, Neuroscience by Bears, Connors, Paradiso, Principles of Medical Biochemistry by Meisenberg/Simmons etc.

>But that probably isn't normal my father's business partner originally got his medical license in Spain and it was a pretty similar experience, ~80 -100 hour weeks for med school and then 80 hour weeks for residency. The requirements in EU are standardized, so a doctor can move from country to country and practice... Or atleast that's how I've understood it. I know if I were to go to USA it would mean practically going through med school again, even if I was the top of the field in the world.

>>1976601
>In reality I suspect you may be embellishing, that or the stereotype of European doctors being lazy is based off of some truth after all.

Well, now that I think about it, the study said 32 hours, but that might have been individual study hours and then lectures and practices on top of that. That would mean 50-60 hours then.

I swear I make do with a lot less than that though. Usually I study like 15 hours plus practices. I almost never attend lectures, because I can't concentrate there. I often zone out. Fuck my brain. I still get good grades though.

>> No.1976679

>>1976662
Most of those books you listed are considered out of date here, but they are still held in high esteem for because of their enormous original contributions. Granted they are updated with each successive publication. They just aren't used to teach anymore.

And yeah for better or worse everyone who wants to practice here must go through their residency again to prove they are adequate. I get good grades compared to my peers trying to get into med school, but I want to get into a higher tier med school so I study longer. But my grades reflect my extra studying. I also skip lectures regularly though, especially morning ones. I only went to about 3/4 (probably less) of my ochem lectures throughout the year. But he was a shitty teacher so I didn't learn anything even when I did show up.

I would record how much time you spent studying each week for a few weeks. I never thought I studied near that much until I actually recorded it for finals week last semester. You might be a much older year than me though.

The last two years of medical school are relatively easier because you are no longer buried in books but can actually FINALLY start applying the things you learned, so much less studying is required

Yeah I totally wasn't denying that USA didn't have some of the best doctors. Well you probably have most of the best doctors. But then not all of your doctors graduate from Ivy League universities, am I right? So the average competence of a doctor is probably similar between America and rich European countries. In any case I'm pretty sure it comes down to individual ability and motivation though. So I'm pretty sure even in my class there are guys who would do very well in top Ivy League schools.

The doctors here raise alarm if the work week gets over 50 hours. Normally doctors work 40 hours and get paid $100-120k a year. Some get paid $200k+. And there aren't any malpractice insurances either, I think. Malpractice lawsuits yes, but the fines for fucking up are quite low. Taxes are very high, but then the health care is free, education is free, there's good social security and children get benefits etc.

I'm beginning my 3rd year now. It's a bit different than in USA, but our first years are mainly spent on theoretical stuff aswell. I actually kept close record of my study hours and results per course this spring:

Physiology (the Guyton book): rated at 270 hours total; Studied 70 hours total plus practices (around 30-40 hours I can't remember): 88+%
Medical biochemistry (metabolism): rated 160 h, did 32 h plus practices (12 h): 80+%
Biochemical endocrinology: 80 hours, did 20 + practice (only 3 hours): 85+%
Epidemiology 60 hours: 6 hours: 80+%

That translates youghly into 15 hours per week over 3 months including practices.

>Not that elective of a school. Its fantastic for its research and etc. but admissions aren't as selective as American elite schools. For example, Cambridge accepted nearly a third of its applicants vs. Harvard which accepts 7%.

>Competitiveness for undergrads probably rank in the Top 15 of American schools due to the population differences primarily

You really can't compare the admissions figures of UK universities with US universities, esp Oxford and Cambridge, for a number of reasons:

- In the UK you are only allowed to apply to 5 universities, while in America you can apply for as many as you can afford: this obviously leads to an increase in applications to all universities in America, and means that the applicants to UK universities tend to be more self-selecting.
- You can only apply to either Cambridge or Oxford for undergraduate study (unless you're an organ scholar, lol) which further cuts down the numbers applying.
- Simple maths means that, given America's huge population and the UK's relatively small one, there are going to be more applicants/place in the US universities.

It's really difficult to get into Oxford or Cambridge: don't let the figures fool you.

I applied to Edinburgh. I turned it down, but that was for engineering and I'm guessing that's not what you have applied for. It's full of english pricks.

Starting Royal Holloway in September.

I can only assume it's going to be amazing.

The University of Sex, where everyone gets laid.

Guess where. ;)

Sorry, but I've heard it's a bit of a dump. Faded grandeur and that. Founder's Building is obviously very cool tho

Well I am English, so I guess I''ll be one of those pricks.

I'll be applying for German and Norwegian. UCL is the only other uni that does Norwegian, so if my grades aren't right that's going to change the game quite a bit. UCL will be my top choice, I think.

Everyone does get laid in my pants, but my pants are in the university, not the other way around. ;)

I went to the open day and it was lovely. Where did you hear it's a dump?

My friends. Might be snobbery on their part

Not to say all english people are pricks, its just many of them who do go to Edinburgh are. You don't sound like one anyway. You might want to consider living costs, as London can be a pain financially for a student.

L6er? What does that mean?

I think I'll apply to some others. Say, at Sheffield I think it is, you can do German and Dutch under the umbrella of Germanic Studies. And I'd consider Bristol as well, just because it's a lovely place and Derren Brown went there - so it must be good.

Yeah, the prices are a devil in both places. I'm not sure which is pricier - Edinburgh or London. And I've got to pay the high tuition fees. I'm glad you don't think I sound like a prick, haha.

Well, I'm from birmingham, so it takes a lot for me to consider something a dump.

Lower Sixth-er. Year 12-er.

Not interested in going for Oxford/Cambridge then? If you're good enough to get into UCL I reckon you'd have a shot!
