I've been loosely following the whole "video game essay" trend for about 8-9 years, and oddly I think the guys who got in on the trend earliest (as in, before it was an actual trend) have the most talent out of all them, and their stuff still holds up, while newer youtubers who began doing the same thing kinda suck at it. Like the concept of "video game analysis" wasn't really a thing in 2011-2013 so the guys doing it back then had a reason to call it analysis as opposed to a review. But since it became trendy, game reviews now often masquerade as analysis despite not really being analytical. The core of analysis is trying to get underneath a piece of work and sussing out what makes it tick. Most game reviewers can't do this so they pad out their videos to 30 minutes and dissect each element of the product like a frog on a table. Reviews in this format are mechanical and boring, and fail to capture the spirit of the work they're describing.

Anyway, I haven't seen enough film/literature/music analysis to know if it's a problem there too, but it probably is.

How can anyone who's spent any time around good writing/well written comedy enjoy sseth he's like box ticking edgy, I remember seeing him posted all over the place and when I finally checked it out it just felt so forced the older ones are better but for the last 2 years I think he recognised how retarded his audience were and just milked it putting zero effort in.
Er and douchbagchoc are at least capable of writing actual jokes rather than le funny list and nigger cutaway gags plus their editing is much smoother.

Usually the first people who do stuff like this have a crossover between a good education and their passion for stuff like video games and movies so they can apply some actual good writing and academic rigor to the subjects they talk about.
The more recent ones are just idiots who saw those early videos and decided to use the style without any if that background (most of them probably arent smart enough to get a college degree or have even read anything good in their lives).
This has happened with pretty much every subject that people like to talk about on youtube and now it's just overrun with mediocre frauds who's audience have never known any better.
