I still don't honestly understand the hate.
It's no different than movies, or fiction books (although I respect with books it's a break from electronics).
It transports you to a different world, but puts you in control of all the actions, and can be a nice escape from life for stressed people.

The obvious answer is house of leaves. The less obvious answer is the complete works of charles fort. Mildly unrelated but world war Z is a fun read with some decent moments of psychological horror but not as much atmosphere or the same tone. Just stay as far away from the movie as you can.

I feel like Chrono Trigger has held up so well as a GOAT candidate because it follows a very simple myth formula. Call to action, travel to magical realms (in this case other times), death and rebirth of the hero, overcoming of evil. Along the way you get strong archetypal characters, the genius, the sorcerer, the knight, etc. So Hero of a Thousand Faces, or an introductory letter work of Jung's (I prefer his autobiography to Man and His Symbols, Robert A. Johnson, a student, actually has even better myth breakdowns, pic related, also like 120 pages because bit just does the Grail myth). That or Brother's Grimm or the Arabian Nights.

>>19684387
Victor Pelevin - Homozapiens, also sold as Generation P. Wacky politics, meets keen insight, meets some Babylonian mythology. Throw in some amanita and LSD, and Boris Yeltsin being a hologram controlled by the global neoliberal cabal, and the absurdity of 1990s "free market" Russia, and you got a wild ride. It's less mature than his other work in terms of focus, but still a lot of fun. I liked it more than his more popular Sacred Book of the Werewolf, but that fits well too. It's also wacky politics mixed with fantasy elements. His short story about the mantis is great too. Helmet of Horror is the best I've read from him but doesn't do politics really, it's much more about myth and the philosophy of progress, but it's also a book written as a chat log so a good entry point for people with low attention spans.

>>19684945
Seconding House of Leaves. If you want the weirdness without the horror, and with much deeper analysis, Borges is great. Start with Ficciones. It's all short stories. I'd probably start with The Lottery of Babylon, The Circular Ruins, The Garden of Forking Paths, and The Library of Babel before jumping into the literary criticism ones since they are more accessible and help you get your ground. The one about the encyclopedia on the parallel worlds is my favorite but a tough story to have right near the start of the collection. Helps to get into it first.

Oh, and keep your phone around for Borges for looking shit up. Some of the references add context, others are pretty much just window dressing.

Unfortunately, the most popular translation of his collected works sticks with Borges' use of words that appear very infrequently in Spanish. So instead of curses/invective/swears, you get imprecations, etc. I got a perfect score on the verbal GRE without studying and still found a bunch of words I didn't know. It's kind of frustrating. It captures his style and I get he uses rare words for a reason stylistically, language being a labyrinth and all, but at times it is pretty tiresome and helps just to have a quick look up.

Most references are gloss but for Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, my favorite, it's worth skimming a summary of Berkeley, Hume, and Kant vis-a-vis the noumenal, if you're not familiar.

Now, anyone got something like the original Diablo? Already read The Darkness That Comes Before and Beserk.

>video games these days are made by people who grew up playing video games
not entirely, but even so this is no different from other artforms
>have more interesting lives than sitting in a dark room all day playing some retarded game
not really, people who make films tend to be hollywood nerds that spend all day "in a dark room", or the equivalent for indie/international stuff. people who write books tend to have reading as their primary passtime, hence the complaints about mfa programs spawning endless literature about writers' boring ass lives
also i feel like a distinction is to be made between obvious skinnerbox stuff and games with artistic depth, i.e. nobody is getting addicted to what remains of edith finch or yume nikki

A complicated bit of internet history. Homestuck is a comic with such an immensily cancerous fanbase that it was the only fanbase to ever fully be banned from 4chan, something not even the bronies achieved. Homestuck fanbase migrated to Undertale when that came out, the insane inner core of the Undertale fanbase which sends each other cookies with razors inside and stuff are the Homestuck loons. They are also the tards making all of those Hiveswap things.
Undertale is greatly inspired by Earthbound, to the point that the Japanese accepted it as a successor and made it one of their favourite games. In the West however the new and retarded Undertale fanbase looked back to Undertale's inspirations, and found the Mother (Earthbound) series.
Thats why the Earthbound fanbase is turbocancer supreme now, when a decade ago it was a random JRPG classic that nobody except smash players and oldfags knew.
Why do I know so much about this shit
>>19695280
I am not sure, the authors that give me the light hearted trippy Mother vibes the most are Kurt Vonnegut and Neil Gaiman. Vonnegut for the trippy stuff, Gaiman for the ethereal one.
