Now, I've been thinking about a way to respond (seriously) and defend my decision to you, but I'm not sure of how best to do it. I mean what does it matter to you what I take? How could you possibly be a judge on whether or not it's a waste of my time. It's not the subject matter that's the important part of these classes. Sure I'll become a little more learned, but it's the skills I'm going to learn by taking these classes that are the most important piece of the equation. I'll be learning how to improve my reading, critical thinking, reasoning, and writing skills. That's true for all my classes. My Ritual studies professor is one of the most knowledgeable faculty on campus. I already had a class with him and it sure wasn't a walk in the park. I'm sure this class will be the same intensity or higher. Also, it's my senior year and I'm all but done with my major and minor. Why not finish it up with some classes that sound interesting and could possibly be even fun?

You're in no position to judge what classes I'm taking based on the titles. You cannot possibly know what's to be discussed, read, and learned.

I love going to a British university and not having to do this scattershot approach to learning. Here, you do a specific degree in a specific subject so that by the end of your 3 years there you have more than basic conversational knowledge of a subject.

Uh, you do a specific degree in American University to.

Choose a major, sign up for the classes in that major, and you go to those classes. Its pretty simple.

i mean, everyone has to take a basic math and science class, and basic english, but thats about it.

Yes, they do count.

I'm getting my degree in English, but I still have to take 3 hours of Math (1 class) and 8 of Science (2 classes) 3 classes out of a four year degree really don't make that big of a difference.

This post made me laugh. I graduated with a degree in liberal arts, but had to take some science classes to fulfill degree requirements. I almost every one of my classes, there was at least one hot chick--except the science ones.

The most resistible bugawufs I've ever seen in my life populated those science classes. Most weren't even passable in obscure and forgiving instances when the professor would turn off the lights for his powerpoints. The most attractive girl in my botany class had a hooked nose and acne. One of her eyes were always significantly more open than the other.

I cringe to think back on it.

And this is why British people are fucking retarded. You see, in America, we have an educational system that actually tries to make people well-rounded. We actually believe in strengthening and reinforcing a variety of skills instead of letting the little arts kids fuck off and do whatever they want. Your British higher education system sounds like bullshit.

I hope you mean a Liberal Arts field, rather than just majoring in "Liberal Arts." There is nothing more pointless than a diploma that says "This Baccelaureate of Arts in Liberal Arts is awarded to __________" because that means you were too flakey or unmotivated to focus on one course of study.

I have to disagree. While I appreaciate the idea that they want us to be well rounded, when I'm paying 4000 dollars a semester for classes, I should decide wether or not I want to be "well rounded".

The maths you can do after 16 is maths that most people will never need. The problem with our further education system is not that you can choose to specialise - that's its strength. The problem is that there a load of piss-take subjects like sociology or media studies which idiot state-schoolers take without realising they're awful subjects. One reason so many Americans seem to think they know about everything when in fact all they have is a conversational grasp of a scattering of subjects, I suspect, is because of this emphasis on very shallow and very wide education that your system promotes. You cast your nets out too far.

British people aren't 'retarded'. We just have considerably more humility than you imbeciles.

BROTIP: If you REALLY want a job straight out of school that is exactly what you studied, go for a certificate program.

Also, anyone with a degree can get a job, unless you want a specific career one degree is no different than another. It all boils down to:

1. Your connections (and the college you attend has a lot to do with it).
2. How well you can sell yourself to others.

Sounds like my cup o soup.

Also, while I'm here, what are creative writing classes like? I'm hoping I can really learn something instead of just being asked to write stories every week or something. Is it radically different for each professor, or do they all kind of do the same thing?

Creative writing classes are the most egregious wastes of time there is.

All the feedback you get will be couched in niceties and almost completely dishonest. You'll learn nothing.

>I'm hoping I can really learn something instead of just being asked to write stories every week or something.

You're in for a disappointment in that case. Community college creative writing class is basically morning teatime.

You don't have to do much except write however many stories/poems the teacher gives you in a certain time frame, keeping them within certain guidelines. You won't actually learn much, or at least nothing you haven't heard before.

It's not really the professor's fault. These are how writing classes are structured, following the same bland workshop model from the University of Iowa that probably was unique and cutting edge 70 years ago, but is only a waste of time, now.

I've taken a few of these classes (in prose and script formats) and they're the same. Students go away, write stuff, come back, share, receive feedback, go back, try to edit, come back, receive more feedback, receive grade.

The process isn't bad--in theory--but you should see how scared shitless people are to have an actual opinion during workshop. Almost all the feedback you get is people saying, "I liked (this aspect or that character). It/he/she (word for entertained) me." Because the focus is on what is good rather than what is bad.

You leave class saying to yourself, "it's fantastic that everyone liked X, but that doesn't really help me revise the fucking thing."

oddly enough, i'm probably reading just as many textbooks out of school than when i was in.
