Interesting, can you tell me more? How did you start? What do you do day-to-day.

>> No.19660155

>>19660083
I was unemployed and requested to get into professional training from the employment agency to get into the field. It got approved and I had nine months of training in writing of technical manuals, law and regulations, and the big Adobe programs (Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator) as well as technical illustration and HTML. Had an internship in a firm and got hired afterwards.
I write and design manuals for the various devices the firm manufactures, write and update data sheets and the website, check for new regulations and laws and see if feedback comes from customers I can incorporate in newer versions of teh manuals.
It's a lot of learning about the devices and how they work, bothering the engineers with questions, drawing technical illustrations and writing a lot. It's fun, though, and very satisfying.

I think Pynchon had that job at Boeing before he got big. Would you recommend it as a career path? I think I can write well enough and I'll have finished my degree in English by next year so I'm thinking it might be a good place to aim for once I've graduated.

Depends on what you like, I guess. You need to write in a precise manner and be able to explain things to the target audience. Depending on the workplace you have, you need the ability to talk to people who probably don't want to talk to you if you need information. It's also important to have some technical understanding, because you need to understand the things you're writing about. I'm the only one doing the work in my firm, so everything's up to me, but if you get into a firm that has a real department for that, you might end up doing only one part of the whole process.
If you have an interest in manuals, understanding the things you have to write about, and like to explain concepts to others, go for it. It's also paying fairly well.
I studied history and literature before that and was pretty bad at sciences in school, btw.
If you want to go that route, best of luck.

>> No.19660368

>>19660334
Thanks for the detailed reply anon. I was pretty bad at science in school as well and that was a concern I had, I'm not sure I would be interested in what I was writing but I think if I was getting paid it wouldn't matter so much. I'll definitely look into it, good luck to you too.

>> No.19660386

>>19660368
Thanks.
The field is vast, anon. If there's an industry that interests you and you can get into it, it can get pretty rewarding. Software needs manuals, too, u-boats and tanks as well, toasters need them as much as smartphones and the types of manuals vary just as much.

Do you buy the products you've written the manual for? I think it would be pretty cool to own a toaster, and then when you have guests come round you make them toast and while you're waiting casually read the manual and mention how well written it is.

I really really thought I wanted to be a psychiatrist. spent about a year volunteering in a substance abuse ward at a hospital while also reading a lot of books on psychiatry and the philosophy of psychiatry, that latter of which really turned me off the field. nothing against (You) but psychiatry just seems absolutely bunk. I'm not necessarily opposed to the medication involved, statisically speaking (they) are claiming that it works in the lab setting, but (they) have no idea how it acts causally. Or maybe (they) do and I'm incorrect and talking out of my ass.
