a novel, short story, play or anything else where the plot is similar to Focault's Pendulum or Crying of the Lot 49. The protagonist should get involved into some kind of conspiracy, that he or she couldn't handle and loses his/her mind.

It would be nice if the book was written in the 21st century.

A Scanner Darkly. The conspiracy aspect is sort of implied in the MCs mental state, but it should work for you.

Valis is good and all, but it is bound to fail for someone looking for stuff like Foucault's Pendulum.

The Holy Mountain by qabbalist Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Umberto Eco's disengenuous in his claimed approach to history: considering all sources potentially fabricated, outrageous claims potentially true.

Inevitably, you must stake your mind to some claims and not others.

If you want some more alternative historical claims read the Oera Linda.
