Is there anything I should read before this, perhaps a book about Russian history, which would improve my understanding of the satirical elements?

Nothing in the book requires any background knowledge from you. It is all stated extremely clear in the book and context is provided to pretty much every situation.
You can just see that Bulgakov is SEETHING at the USSR at every opportunity, didn't like that too much even though i'm not a commie by any means, some episodes come off as Mary Sue-ish.
