Never read a word of Borges.
I'm a illiterate monster?
Ok, so where do I start?

honestly, start with some of his essays.
"Otras Inquisiciones" is one of the most wonderful reads I've ever had, and a true insight into his genius.
he was a better reader than he was a writer, and in his essays he gives you an insight into how he reads.

also, "Siete Noches" is a series of lectures given throughout seven nights. Read "La poesía" (poetry) which is one of them. Just read it patiently and try not to get filtered by it. I assure you it is worth it.

if you dive right into his short stories you will get filtered (especially if you consider yourself an "illiterate monster").
once you get a grasp of his genius through his explanations, then it is much easier (and enjoyable) to read his stories

Literally this. Read it in order. The first collection is the perfect intro to Borges before diving into Ficciones

Ficciones is his best work but perhaps the worst place to start unless you’ve read other SA literature that stemmed from him

That's where I started when I was a young man of 18. I hadn't read any other SA literature.
