How do I cope with the fact that I will never, ever, EVER understand highbrow literature?

I used to like reading for pleasure but as soon as I started my degree in literature I realised I'll never have the faintest clue about the deeper meaning of most books. Never mind the fact that the Illiad, Odyssey and others felt like a complete slog. In a sense, the idea of studying and grasping literature had always appealed to me, but when push came to shove I got irredeemably filtered.

>deeper meaning of most books
how do you even know the meanings taught in academia are the true meanings of the author?

It depends on where those wantings are coming from, if they are coming from a place of maybe feeling inferior that is what is revealed to you, but ideas will come to yes
