It has been amazing honestly. There was no unfortunately no interesting university life because of corona, so I've just been chilling at home for almost two years. With just a tiny bit of work every day I've managed to finish my PhD faster than almost anyone in the history of the programme I'm in.

Are uni generals allowed around here? We sometimes have interesting threads on the subject. What are your experiences and opinions? What are you reading? Do you read more or fewer books in your free time after graduating? I always read a lot but have found that I started reading even more books after getting my MA.

I'd love to keep studying. Learning things is a great way to spend a life. Working sucks.

>Do you read more or fewer books in your free time after graduating?
Way more. The reading discipline I've acquired in university was invaluable.

These are some of the most encouraging thoughts I've read in a long time; I need that.
Tell me, anon, how many hours a day did you work on your PhD? What's your reading routine like? Your lifestyle sounds like something I would like to emulate.

>Tell me, anon, how many hours a day did you work on your PhD?
It depends. Some days more, some days less. I don't think I've had a single 8-hour workday though. I work better in smaller focused bouts. I did twice go on writing retreats to the middle of nowhere to hammer out a full chapter in a week. Both retreats were huge successes.

If you write 500 words a day (slightly less than half a page) then a full PhD will take around a year. Obviously there's research and reading etc, but the whole 500-words-a-day really resonated with me. I had MANY working days where my only goal was writing those 500.

>What's your reading routine like?
With regards to academia or just in general? I don't read obsessively. I usually read between 40-60 books a year. I have other hobbies (running, board games, bit of gaming) which also take time.

I am about to finish my major in humanities and there are two paths for me now in the form of a masters degree: investigation or education. Which one would you recommend I pick? I know that this is a very personal question, but if you could give me reasons as to why you'd pick one over the other you'd really be helping me.

unironically though, try shadowing your advisor a bit to see if they're good. Before having them as an option, so that they don't pamper you; also, find someone else who had them as an advisor and ask their opinion.

There's no necessary correlation between studying philosophy and reading books, even at the PhD level. Most people in academia are severely phoning in their job and don't have any passion for it. Most students are doing the bare minimum to get by.

Don't ask what the average philosophy student reads, ask what you would and could read and do with a philosophy major.

One would involve doing a lot of reading and writing, and basically publishing on university and stuff. The other would be more about teaching in front of pupils.
