He sticks to to a formula revolving around the number 12. Kind of warps what could have been a more natural ending.

The endings for the different characters is a bit too coincidental, most likely because it was thought out first.

i own it and ive read it. i plan on rereading it after reading all of kazantzakis's other major works and prevelakis's biography of him. but for now i reread passages every so often, mainy the 7 headed god, buddha/whore conversation and the death scene.

Under the Volcano is Good, but it can't be the best book of the 20th century.
Imho has a fundamental flaw. You have "3 protagonists" but each chara speaks with the same inner voice (lexicon/syntax in the flow of thoughts doesn't change according to the life experience).
Imho the project was too ambitious for Lowry's talent.

I'm not the anon who called you a commie. But yes, making fun of someone by calling them "commie" because they're triggered by what Gulag Archipeligo says about their faggy ideology is better than "chud."

Especially so now that you've attempted to lean into the concept of self-awareness while unironically coming to the defense of a utopian ideology.

It's impossible to pick just one book from almost any century, let alone one that contains the sheer variety that the 20th did.

My personal favorite (at least my favorite that hasn't already been named) is The Tree of Man by Patrick White
