having a bookshelf in your cozy living space creates a good atmosphere, if you live in a boring modern utilitarian space you are ngmi. i wish i realized this sooner in life instead of being like you.

the newer ones with the rougher surface instead of the old glossy ones actually don't suffer from whitening as much, they also look much better

Yes. It's a hodge-podge ofof different books from different publishers which has gone through countless different hands. I don't give a fuck about the aesthetics so long as I can open it up and read it that's all I ask at this point.

>> No.19608542

It isn't the whitening that ruins the aesthetic, it's the soulless, cookie cutter, Penguin-branded spines that look terrible.

Why not, it's a book, it's meant to be read. LOL at being so prissy over budget paperbacks that you won't even open them fully.

Ngl they do look nice.
Here's the deal: open both covers on a flat surface, and then equal small amounts of pages on each side and press down, keep doing that until you reach the middle. Et voilà, broken in spine that won't suffer

>> No.19608704

>>19608542
I don't mind the plain spines personally, they're supposed to be cheap paperbacks for classics after all, but one thing I would like is for them to get their shit together and line up the white stripes with the Penguin logo

>> No.19608726

>>19608696
I read one handed, so I fold the book back on itself, i.e. so I'm reading one page, with the opposite page facing away from me. The creases are inevitable. Though some books survive better than others, even within the same series.

They do actually look nice, though.
The black and white spines are much more understated than most anything else in my shelves, even classics from other publishers.
