No, he's a very overrated author.

He literally stole a plot from Cervantes.

Some novelists write works that read almost as plays with some description as filler among the large passages of dialogue. Jane Austen is one example. Shakespeare could build his novels using a neutral third person narrator and investing his true gifts in the dialogue.

Every single character in Shakespeare books is a novel

A followup question:

Does anyone know of a writer who excelled at poetry but wrote bad novels?

IF HE COULD HAVE WRITTEN A NOVEL, HE WOULD HAVE; IF HE COULD HAVE BECOME A NOVELIST, HE WOULD HAVE, BUT HE ONLY EVER WROTE A FEW KITSCHY PLAYS, AND SOME SCHLOCKY SONNETS —IF HE EVEN EXISTED.

Novels are retarded, as in the plot has to be slowed down by introspection. Shakespeare writes poetry where the introspection is brillantly distilled and expressed in consdensed blocks within the plot. Perhaps he could have pulled it off but it is a different art form and it may be that Shakespeare is too brillant a poet to be retarded as novels require.

How are his play 'kitschy'?

Amelia Bassano wrote the most famous plays. Shakespear is a white supremacist hack

You shouldn't read Shakespeare, you should seek out performances in your area and interact with the work as it was intended. The energy of a live performance outclasses reading stage directions any day of the week.
