Its a good game, the problem is that most of its ardent fans basedface over an exposition dump that occurs at the end of the game. Up to that point it is a pretty standard thriller, albeit with the typical Metal Gear weirdness.

if you played the first game you'd have realised part of the way through that the entire situation is an engineereed replica of the events of the first game with some mysterious differences
that should be enough to clue you in that something big would happen before it actually happened so saying "it all happens at the end" is a bit short sighted

Metal Gear fails as both a game and as what it truly wants to be: a movie. Kojima has always punched far above his weight class and it's obvious that he uses video games as his platform because he was laughed out of film and television. (Given how low the bar is for those media, that should really tell you something.)
