He didn't know all that much about German Idealism except Schopenhauer.

He frequently references Kant, though mostly in a negative light, and many of his views on aesthetics are polemic to Schlegel's his contemporaries'

His entire understanding of Kant just comes from Schopenhauer.

He critiques German philosophy as a whole for taking too much from Kant. He calls them the descendants of theologians who had the audacity of believing that Kant was a turn for the better. Either he read them or he is talking out of his ass.

He criticised Kant for things which Schopenhauer misunderstood Kant on.

He actually didnt read the German Idealists up to his last years in Turin. For most of his life assumed that Schopenhauer's accounts of German idealist philosophy were accurate: he discovered that they werent once he tried reading Hegel. Somewhere there's a letter od his to Pietro Gast, in which he basically regrets to have trusted Schopenhauer, and in which he claimed that Hegel was actually a philosophical ally of his. It somewhat makes sense, once you keep in mind Hegel's critique of morality and virtue, his notion of "death of God", his complete immanentism, and many other aspects of his philosophy.
He had a similar experience with Spinoza. Earlier in his career he thought that he was a standard Jewish philosopher, but when he ended up actually reading him he claimed that Spinoza was his "predecessor".

>He actually didnt read the German Idealists up to his last years in Turin.
He dabbled in them in the early 80's, since he praises them and criticises Schopenhauer's criticism of them.
