Our pride and vanity led us to disobey even the simplest and most harmless command from our Creator, and so we have been cursed ever since. I think the Fall explains a ton about humans, which is why I'm so convinced it really happened.

And, frankly, I'm really disgusted at the entire Enlightenment conception of man as having fundamentally good impulses. That's bullshit. Left to his own devices, man is fundamentally wicked. You are correct, OP.
