In a lot of ways, I think the story of Machiavelli is the story of a lot of us. He understood that his beloved country would never again see the golden days of the Roman empire.
He once held the reins of power of his country, Florence, for a brief time. I say country because in Italy in his time your city was your country. Then he was sidelined for the rest of his life and forced to watch others govern arguably the only thing other than the idea of Italia the only thing he held holy. He spends his later years in public houses betting nickels and dimes with the ignorant and hateful peasants of Florence. So close, yet so far Machiavelli.
