Actually, modern scholarship is closing in the judgment that he was an excellent playwright who was primarily a popularizer. Things that we take as examples of his genius are merely contemporary commonplaces--which is why there is controversy over his authorship of the plays themselves. He’s technically right. Many of the works Shakespeare is attributed to are not actually his own. In fact the only reason we know this at all is the fact that Shakespeare bothered to rewrite anything. From my understanding Hamlet was a story before Shakespeare but he just redid the story in a fashion more with the times. He did that often
