19535778 No.19535778 [Reply] [Original]

My class has organized a secret santa event and I pulled the lot of a guy who said he's heavily into politics and economics. He has strong libertarian values but recently mentioned that he is also looking to broaden his scope in order to challenge his own views. I was thinking of gifting him this book and was wondering if it's decent. Was also thinking of gifting him something like Kapital but I guess that's a bit too much on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Suggestions are welcome too.

Also, to broaden the thread topic somewhat, what are the best/worst books you were gifted for Christmas

Friends and family are a bit afraid of gifting me books because I sperg too much about them.
I got an Etymological Dictionary once, however. I loved it.
I'm not sure whether your friend would enjoy Zinn or just dismiss it as ideological drivel.

That's what concerns me too based on the reception it has received. I'm looking for something that challenges without resorting to straw-man fallacies

Nope, just genuinely curious if "A People's History" is any good. My plan B is a bundle of The Republic and The Prince

It depends on how receptive he is to pathos. I can agree with the historical facts that Zinn presents while disagreeing with its moral characterization of them. That's how I dismiss it as ideological drivel without having to go through the book and claim he's stating historical falsehoods.
