Are these other Tolkien novels good for a LoTR fan? There seem to be quite a bit that were edited and published by his son after his death and they are based in the LoTR world but I'm unsure which would be more interesting for a big fan. Thinking of getting some as a gift.
Children of Hurin here seems pretty good.

They are all different versions of the fragmented stories in the Silmarillion. I would read that first and then if you like it read Unfinished Tales.

Then if you still want more you can read the longer and edited versions of these stories: Beren & Luthien, Children of Hurin, and Fall of Gondolin.

The Children of Hurin is a novel, it's long enough to be a novel. Beren and Lúthien is an anthology of the most completed versions of the epic poem. The Fall of Gondolin is another anthology of different versions of that story, the first one is complete, sadly the last and best one isn't.

Wasn't there a new history of Middle Earth released recently?
