Les Miserables... well honestly it isn't the greatest... Superfluous for no reason at all... a bad portrait of time (as opposed to War and Peace). A bad story of redemption (as opposed to A Tale of Two Cities or even Crime and Punishment).

I feel the Brothers Karamazov, War and Peace, and Don Quixote deserve that tier. The Great Gatsby... While it certainly is one of the best American works, I feel it is lesser than Faulkner or Hemingway, or even Morrison, Hurston, or Ellison.

Orwell had an excellent control of language though, and I feel it's something you cannot deny.
I'd compare it to say... One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. They could never be considered truly timeless because of their blatant political message, but still ought to be appreciated.
