The Aubrey–Maturin series kind of takes a while to hit its stride but is really worth a read if one's into historical fiction and stories with attention to detail and authenticity. The real scope of the series and the penmanship behind them unravels by book three.
The first novel had originally been planned as a standalone and may scare a casual reader away with all the nautical terms but they're all explained as the story goes on. Book 2 sets up what it to come in the following volumes spanning 25 years of writing, developing the characters. Which is not to say the first two aren't complete and worthwhile experiences, but what comes after is much better.
The novelty sort of wears off after a dozen books or so because there's only so many heroics and coups a person can reasonably achieve, and even after that it's still a decent if you've enjoyed the previous installments.
It's not just about sea and sailing ships either, a good chunk of story and some of the more memorable moments take place on land, be it early XIX century England, Boston, a desolate island or the Raj.
