There were no made-up words. It was clear to most any reader what was intended by what was said, many said as much at the time. To argue that the words being used are 'too complicated' is possibly valid critique but really not an argument of substance in regards to the topic. A mind unable to unwrap the meaning of phrases of simple chained-together words is unnecessary for that conversation due to their incapability of intellect, their lack of grounding in the subject, or a combination of the two. Put simply, you either know the concepts, or are able to work your way to them from context and linguistic aptitude. If you don't satisfy either of those, why should anyone care what you have to say on the matter?

>> No.19489806

It makes sense in the context of his paper. You're quoting someone else's write up of a journal paper from the middle. Of course to people not familiar with the field it doesn't make sense.

The paper is fine: https://www.gwern.net/docs/philosophy/mind/2012-bakker.pdf

The problem isn't that the paper is pretentious, it's a solid write up, it's that the "theory" isn't a well developed theory, but those are few and far between anyhow.

The first part suckers you in but then the entire plot goes off the rails around page 100 and it never recovers in the other 2400 pages of the series. It is an intensely unsatisfying journey that drags on way too long with its litany of miseries. It also features one of the worst examples of what I call "Weyland-Yutani syndrome" that I've ever read, and it pervades the entire work as bad, or even worse, than Game of Thrones.

The tendency of antagonists in poorly written stories to repeatedly and steadfastly pursue myopically suicidal courses of action that have no conceivable benefit for anyone, least of all themselves, with the implicit or explicit end-result of the destruction of their livelihoods/their lives/everyone's lives/multicellular life as we know it/reality and existence itself. I call it "Weyland-Yutani syndrome" because the eponymous corporation in the Aliens franchise (films, games, books, and comics) continually attempts harvesting the xenomorphs for some vague unstated goal that hypothetically would increase their profits but which has in fact resulted in the destruction of the entire universe multiple times in repeatedly reset continuities.

The villains in Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn (King Elias, Pryrates, Ineluki, Ingen Jegger, Utuk'ku) have a plan that hinges on, effectively, destroying the world and everything in it including themselves, which nobody is willing or able to do anything about, and which is resolved at the end of the series (literally in the last 10 pages) through an asinine deus ex machina where they basically self-destruct, which is quite literally the only way their plans could be averted because the antagonists were all effectively gods at that point.
None of this is ever explained.

speaking of japanese sci fi, has anyone seen Junk Head (2013)? it was a short film on youtube, they took it down although i have the torrent. it's fantastic, a stop motion film made by a guy in his basement, every set piece is hand crafted and it looks gorgeous. the story is also really cool, set in a future where humans don't die but can't reproduce so the race degenerated via cloning and so on

Just as a note, the part in Sword of the Lictor where Sev leaves Thrax, up to the point where he reaches lake Diuturna, is perhaps one of the best parts I've read in any book, ever. Especially the strangeness that is Typhon and that whole sequence of events.
I want more of that, which is why I enjoy Made in Abyss so much. Just traveling and uncovering secrets and meeting weird and strange characters, I enjoy that so much. Political fantasy with houses and wars and stuff is so nasty.

Also somewhat related, the parts in Aspect emperor with Achamian traveling the wilderness with his gang of scalpers, that was the best part in the whole Second Apocalypse books.

Not shitting on you or anything, but this is mildly interesting. Mostly because I think that those were the worse parts of the series, perhaps because the time it took them to get to the Ordeal. Not that I could tell you what my favorite part was either, the entire series is filled with memorable moments. Too many to recount.

Huangfu Liejun’s expression had also grown dim. He sighed and said. “The war of the Divine Realm six quadrillion years ago was truly too fierce and cruel…. That battle could be considered as being the largest war since the formation of the Divine Realm. In that battle, over ten Godkings fell. As for High Level Heavenly Deities, the number of them that perished was innumerable.”

Qin Yu was overwhelmed with shock.

Over ten Godkings fell? Countless High Level Heavenly Deities died?

Gu Zhuang smiled bitterly and said. “Brother Qin Yu, let me tell you. The Three Great Palaces, Misty Mystic Palace, Black Wind Palace and the Heaven Desolate Palace, all three of them were named after their first Palace Master. In that battle… the first Palace Masters of the Misty Mystic Palace, Black Wind Palace and Heaven Desolate Palace all fell. I am someone who succeeded the Black Wind Palace’s Palace Master in the course of the battle.”

[TL: Misty Mystic Lan Xuan. Black Wind Hei Feng. Heaven Desolate Tian Huang. Liejun Great Split/Rend.]

“I am the same.” Ji Lusheng sighed and said. “That battle was truly too cruel and fiery. The battle spread through the entire Heaven and Earth… Practically all of the Godkings had shown themselves. Even Exalted Celestials had joined the battle in the shadows!”

Qin Yu’s heart shook with shock.

Exactly what sort of war happened six quadrillion years ago?

Qin Yu have once heard about the Gold Punishment Lord Xing Yuan’s father-in-law mentioning this battle in Yuchi City. That High Level Deity had only mentioned that the Divine Realm would have a war every six billion years.

However, it appears now that the war of every six billion years was merely a small battle.

That battle from six quadrillion years ago was the true war of the Divine Realm.

My point is, how are the Dunyain so intellectually advanced that they can defeat the ayys with a speech check? Shouldn't the inchoroi also have superior intellect given their origins?

Inchoroi are bioweapon with limited specialization (in rape), they don't even understand how their spacecraft work, and likely were supposed to operate under command of its AI. Smartest inchoroi that left after crash barely managed to find one gun in wreck, and their bioengineering was likely done by remaining automated systems in ship. Real question is why didn't creators of inchoroi discovered Daimotic sorcery (that fags who can't even smelt steel manged to discover) and engineered specialized galaxy brain sorcerer species that will run a train on gods' asses,

The only explanation I can think of for Tekne is that the Lovers just did not have ANY ability to use sorcery for whatever reason. It's entirely possible this is related to the 144 thousand human limit, as the ONLY thing that could possibly be justified to make the population of earth specifically important to the Outside over everywhere else in the universe is sorcery. Isn't it said that the Nonmen ALSO came to earth from space, or were created on earth by a space faring race, and only afterwards developed sorcery?
And the only two explanations I have for Earth being special itself are either Outside predestination time paradox(the earth is special because it is), or that it's not just some random planet at all and was made, either by the gods, the solitary god, some as yet unknown race's even more advanced tekne, or perhaps is just the nexus for the universe.
I may be remembering wrong, but do we have any evidence for oblivion on planets other than earth? The nonmen seem very knowledgable about it, like it's blatantly obvious. And yet somehow the lovers couldn't replicate the same thing with tekne? If it's just a matter of mass or gravitational fields, I'd think it would be a simple matter for them. Why on earth bakker does this I'll never understand.

Interestingly enough it's ambiguous whether he came from space, or from the outside. It's possible he was an alien, but he refers to himself as a God, refers to his place of origin as either "Heaven" or "the Starving", and says his motivation for leaving was love of the world and wanting to escape the wrath of those who forbid it, doesn't exactly make sense if he was an alien like the lovers. Also he was entirely alone, and describes himself as "the first in whose heart your blood beat", implying he himself had no ancestors.

So if that interpretation is correct, the Non-men are descendents of a ciphrang who fled the outside for the mortal world. A God who apparently invented sorcery, as contradictory as that seems. And if ONE God can come out of the outside and father a race, then who's to say what the origin of humanity is? It's possible this explains the importance of earth and it's inhabitants, they're all part-ciphrang!
