I like Fitzgerald. He's not accurate at times but I like his poetic texture.

This. I think he has a good balance of poetic skill, and little difficultly. He’s not as easy as fagles, but he is more literary

Think I'm going with Fagles, but Butler and Pope seem good as well.

What do people here think about Ian Johnston?

Lattimore for accuracy. Lombardo/Fagles for modern readability with an edge given to Fagles, Pope for beauty.

Homeric Greek to English butchers everything about homeric greek, so you might as well just go with something that is enjoyable to read since you're so far removed from the source material anyway.

I would say read Fagles, and if you enjoyed the story and want a new twist on it, go with Pope, that's what I decided on an enjoyed it.

I remember evaluating this a while back. Lattimore is definitely number one. Number two is Fagles or Fitzgerald; I confuse them.
