If you ever read deeper about the author, he seems incredibly petty and obsessed. His early blog posts are just a shining beacon of salt because his writing wasn't appreciated enough, lol.
>BECAUSE FANTASY ISN'T TAKEN SERIOUSLY!!!
He's so autistic he never once considered he's the problem. Ironic, too, since in a podcast one time they asked him some question about people felt about the books and he got triggered and sounded slightly offended, answering with,
>Well, I don't care how people feel, they're my books, I'll write them how I please.
You just know this is the type of guy that thinks everyone that criticizes him is too stupid to understand him or has ulterior motives and bullies his associates to stroke his ego.
He unironically emanates insane beta energy, which is probably why he made himself a god-like self insert in his book.

I remember liking the prose though, I read it when I was 14, but even then I realized Kvothe is the authors juvinile DnD Mary Sue character. Don't remember the second nearly aswell. Bill O'Reilly wrote a novel where a tall no-nonsense TV journalist of Irish heritsge conflicts with people at his network, gets forced out. He then proceeds to brutally murder everyone who crossed him, while being pursued by the protagonist, a straight talking detective who is also tall and Irish.

It transcends cringe, the man was so sepf absorbed he wrote himself in twice, and all the people the antagonist killed were a reference to his conflicts with CNN when he worked there.

>The lion's share of old-school literature IS fantasy, they just pretend it isn't. The Odyssey is full of gods and spells. Oedipus Rex has a sphinx and a prophecy. There are witches in Macbeth, faeries in Midsummer Night's Dream, and a ghost in Hamlet. Dante's Inferno? Beowulf? All looks like fantasy to me....

>As far as having my book recognized as literature? [Pat shrugs] Why would I want that? I mean, have you read Great Expectations? Gech. Why would I want to invited into their little club? Give me Tim Powers and Phillip K Dick. Give me
Le Guin, Gaiman, and Pratchett. Give me McKillip and Whedon. These are the storytellers. These are our modern mythmakers. Our oracles. Our dreamers. I want to be on that team.

Desu I don't think you need to exclusively read the canon. Many things that are considered "high brow" nowadays were popular entertaintment when they were written (Shakespeare, Melville, Homer, etc.) but you're really doing yourself a disservice, especially if you want to be a writer, to not at least try and read the classics. Read everything you can. Expand your horizons, faggots. It's good for your writing and good for your soul.

I am normally someone who defends genre fiction, and even escapism generally, as a mostly harmless and potentially edifying hobby or coping mechanism. It irks me when the religious and ideological try to insert their propaganda into all literature and all culture, and I believe it is healthier to allow a relative aesthetic freedom and imagination to reign in the arts so that there is always some scope - no matter how derided or low brow or forgotten the medium - to think freely.

But having Rothfuss "on my side" trying to represent and defend a similar position makes me feel sick. He sounds like Ernest Cline in this quote, and sounds as if he is trying to make a virtue out of being ignorant of high art, trying to overinflate the importance of popular art... rather than just upholding the (I think easily defensible) value of genre fiction, and mere entertainment. It just reeks of weird, thwarted, beta male egomania.
>Harrumph... why can't I be a genius and a clown at the same time?
At least Tolkien understood hardship. His defenses of this stuff are erudite and backed by the clear understanding of someone who recognizes that fictions are useful to those who suffer greatly. Those who critique Tolkien along these lines like Mieville can't help but make themselves look petty, envious, grasping... "why do these normies enjoy hobbits more than communism... nooooo"

It's not the same with Rothfuss.

So we have a book called "State of Terror" by Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny, where the plot revolves around Ellen Adams, the "heroic, determined and brilliant US secretary of state" (three guesses who this is meant to be) and the Evil Baddie Eric Dunn who "lives in Palm Beach, Florida. He plays a lot of golf. He pulled the US out of the nuclear agreement with Iran" (again, three guesses who this is meant to be).

Poor Ellen is not having a great time of it in her job (the new president doesn't like her, her husband is recently dead, and her last diplomatic outing to Korea didn't go well), but never mind - terrorists are conducting a bombing campaign across Europe and she is on the trail!

The British, French, and other European leaders get short shrift, but Ellen jets from Iran to Pakistan to Russia, doggedly on the trail, until it leads back home and - well, will it spoil the dénouement if I whisper, Orange Man Bad?
