As an Irish person, her books are quite annoying. She deliberately avoids giving any of her characters Irish names, so that her American and British fanbase won't have to look up the pronunciation of a name. In every Irish classroom there is always, it seems, 10 girls named Aoife or Caoimhe or Ciara. None of these common Irish names appear.
And as for the depiction of Irish schooling in Normal People... Marianne is shown as getting top results in her Leaving Certificate by being intelligent. In reality, wealthy students like Marianne attend "grinds" around the clock in order to prepare for the exam. These grinds really give you an unfair advantage on students trying to study by themselves. I know someone who bought the actual exam paper for their biology exam from their grinds teacher.

Just because she portrayed a character in a certain way, does not mean she is endorsing that person. Connell is intentionally an extremely flawed character, there are a lot of boys in society who don't have male role models, and there a lot of men who struggle to fit into masculine social groups as well, and I don't think its sexist or dishonest to write Connell as a representative of this subsection in her book. I honestly could't say what she is criticising directly, but she is absolutely pointing out an issue that you seem to agree with, one that modern men are being emasculated and lost, while women are becoming more empowered, and not necessarily in a good way. Marianne and Connell are not role models, and it is an incorrect read of the book to look at them and think thats what Rooney wants teenagers to be, you are right that Connell is flawed, but you are mistaken in thinking Connell is what Rooney wants all men to be.
