It's pretty garbage, fantasy normies only love it because "muh prose" but the prose is only marginally better than most other series out there; Rothfuss doesn't hold a candle to Wolfe or Peake or even Eddison

I found this in a dumpster in perfect condition a couple months ago and gave it to my dad. He read it and said it was good. I also noticed most of the negative goodreads reviews were stupid cunt feminists complaining about the lack of female characters. I trust both of these heuristics enough to say that there's about an 85% chance that this is a good book.

Rothfuss is a total fucking fag these days, but it sounds like he might have made one thing worthwhile.

Got to page 19 and just never picked it back up. I gave it to recycling so that the pages can be turned into pencils because the tree that was cut down for that shitty writing to be printed on them deserved better and that it may be of use to someone else.

Weird book with a giant chasm between the prose's quality and the actual story. Its like if someone made a multimillion dollar blockbuster out of a teenager's Harry Potter fan fiction. The quality of presentation and what is being presented are strangely far apart. Solid 6/10.

The feminists hate it because the mc has sex with women but the entire book is like the background story of someone's shitty dungeons and dragons Mary Sue character. It's really fucking awful and I can't believe that anyone would think it's a passable book.

It's shit. The author is so fucking incompetent the story might never be finished. Find a series that is or actually has a chance of being completed someday. I've read the book and it's very unremarkable.

Why do so many modern fantasy authors become such condescending woke fags? It's quite upsetting to see.
Say all you want about Sapkowski but at least he doesn't crave popularity.

Rothfuss is a ruthless if somewhat talented plagerist nothing in his books can't be found elsewhere, usually better quality and more consice too. His second book is a jumbled d&d campaign retelling with some powerful cringe (kungfu and sex god arc) in the mix, a wise mans fear made his limitations painfully clear to the public and himself, he will never release the third book because he cant write story for shit and he'll totally bungle the release and lose his comfy convention panels. He'll spend the next 10 years throwing tantrums when people bring up the fact he doesn't do any work, he'll probably start a podcast and then (I know this for a certainty feel free to screencap) he'll walk away from writing citing mental health issues.
Don't bother there's better fantasy out there.

I already listened to a Rothfuss podcast while reading the second book... five years ago? Six years ago? I got a masters degree in the time it's taken him to do shit all.

>It all began when Pat Rothfuss was born to a marvelous set of parents. Throughout his formative years they encouraged him to do his best, gave him good advice, and were no doubt appropriately dismayed when he failed to live up to his full potential.

>In high-school Pat was something of a class clown. His hobbies included reading a novel or two a day and giving relationship advice to all his friends despite the fact that he had never so much as kissed a girl. He also role-played and wrote terrible stories about elves. He was pretty much a geek.

>Most of Pat's adult life has been spent in the University Wisconsin Stevens Point. In 1991 he started college in order to pursue a career in chemical engineering, then he considered clinical psychology. In 1993 he quit pretending he knew what he wanted to do with his life, changed his major to "undecided," and proceeded to study whatever amused him. He also began writing a book....

>For the next seven years Pat studied anthropology, philosophy, eastern religions, the blade, history, alchemy, parapsychology, literature, and writing. He studied six different martial arts, practiced improv comedy, learned how to pick locks, and became a skilled lover of women. He also began writing a satirical advice column which he continues to this day: The College Survivial Guide. Through all of this he continued to work on his novel.

The above is his description on goodreads, obviously written by himself. Rothfuss is the platonic ideal of a redditor. I could not make this as a satire if I tried. Skilled lover of women. Let it sink in. Listen to the music of that sentence. Mull it over in your mind.

I feel tired after laughing so much.
In all seriousness though, I read his book(s?) while in my "shitty fantasy books written by mental people" phase and it was nothing special compared to the others. One thing I remember is that the main character is a jack-of-all-trades (the D&D bard archetype kind) and gets pussy. He is also very much a Marty Sue, who learns everything at an amazing speed, is a self-taught musical and magical genius until he almost burns down the local library, yadda yadda, typical fast-food of fantasy genre type of shit...
It is, in fact, very possible that the main character is his self-insert, considering what he wrote about himself. Make of that what you will, but I will just mock him every time he is mentioned. It's like somebody got their wet fanfiction published, I would be ashamed to receive income from shit like this.

What I can't understand is why it appeals to Redditors so much. You would think an obese, self-assured, comically conceited straight white man writing a Gary sue of himself and making all the women fall down around him, even in his own fucking Goodreads bio, would repel those on r/Books and r/Fantasy. Instead, they lap him up. Why?

Doesn't he fancy himself as a communist and/or feminist? As long as the positive labels, the "digital pheromones" are emitted by a bugman, he is accepted by other bugmen. Nothing else is of much consequence - any drama that might arise (cancelling because he said a no-no word, for example) is just skirmishes for a position in the bugman hierarchy. They can and will grub up whatever he shits, because he is a member of the hive.
I am exaggerating due to my repulsion, but try visiting Reddit and see it through this framework. It is so dreadfully, pathetically inhumane
