How does that make you feel?

>> No.1939635

...like the emotion of seeing yet another empty storefront not contributing to the tax base of my city? WTF am I suppose to feel, it couldn't compete, ergo it sank.

Only whiny-ass liberals would find meaning in that. Conservatives would try to find a way to ban pornography and rally against abortion. Me, I just declare the other two stupid and say "fuck off".

Since they died I have found that the nearby Dymocks has a far greater range of the weird shit that I usually have to venture to out-of-the-way bookshops to find.

Tonight I went there and found Tank Girl, a cult 80's comic you'd normally have to go online to find. My gob was indeed, smacked.

I still love you, Pulp Fiction. I am more than willing to spend more there for your Black Books atmosphere and extensive horror section.

I don't know where you folks are, but I'm on the east coast USA in a major metropolitan area. All the independent bookstores are vanished. And now the used bookstores seem to be vanishing, too: they've all moved to teh internets. With Borders folding, there's honestly nothing left in this area except Barnes and Noble.

This is really fucking depressing to me. I mean, it's one thing when suddenly there were no more Travel Agencies because nobody in their right mind wanted to pay somebody to book plane tickets that you could book for yourself online.

But bookstores are a SOCIAL experience, unlike plane tickets. I know I can find any book I want online, either from amazon or alibris. I have known that for years. That has nothing to do with why I liked to stop by the Borders near me a couple of times a week.

well, the stores closing I can deal with, I guess. But in my city, the main Borders was right in the centre of town, in a beautiful old building, and when it was shut it was replaced by a fucking All Saints (a shitty overpriced clothing store). That bugs me a bit, the fact that books and reading basically are not a basis for a sustainable business in our society but clothing is, even though it's so superficial. They deserve to go out of business. Barnes and Noble even moreso, but they are trying to pretend like they are apple or some shit and bank on the nook.

Which btw, is retarded if you aren't some lowlife thief. Spend 15 bucks on a e-book when you can get the regular one from the same place for the same price or get a hard-cover of it from amazon for 5 bucks. yeah, maybe I was exaggerating. I guess what I really meant was that starbucks coffee isn't "special" in the way that I hear some people say. It's like mcdonalds hamburgers. they're serviceable hamburgers, they do the job, they're not truly terrible, but its silly to rave about how delicious they are.

starbucks fans are like dudes who have never eaten a handmade grilled hamburger and just wont shut up about mcdoubles.

You know what, I'm glad we had this talk. I've been alternating between going to random indie coffee shops and the big chains like CBTL, Starbucks, and Seattle's Best. Sometimes the big chains are better. Just because its a corporation doesn't mean they don't do a better job with their product than some mom and pop place. If this makes me a corporate tool, so be it.

Sometimes the mom and pop places don't give a shit. They have terrible service and subpar drinks. They deserve to get run out of business by the big guys.

As far as the relaxing atmosphere, it depends on what store you go. Generally the more places to sit (nooks/couches) the better it will be.

okay, but seriously. standard practice for starbucks is to take whatever beans they have, and roast them until they are literally black. this removes all of the other flavors inherent in the beans and leaves nothing but a single bitter flavor

they do this BECAUSE they are a chain. because its hard for a chain coffee shop with a million locations to all get good beans. so they burn the shit out of whatever beans they get so that no matter what starbucks you go to it will taste exactly the same.

I have no problem with corporate chains, dude. Chipotle does it pretty well. hell there are other coffee chains that do it better than starbucks, although none of them are especially great about it. I guess you like that bitter taste better than like free trade coffee? that's fine. we all have different tastes. but you can achieve literally the same effect at home without spending an arm and a leg, even with just a ten dollar drip.

I want to open my own really bad bookstore.

>hardly any stock, just empty shelves
>mostly thrillers and crap
>laugh at people when they buy thrillers and crap, even though there's nothing else to buy
>C4 in basement

What I like about the internet is that there's a place where you can download the entire Archie run of Sonic the Hedgehog.

I will miss the Boarders in the Northern VA/DC area.

They actually had varied stock even if they couldn't hold up to internet prices.

All the local Barnes & Nobles carry the exact same thing.
