was he actually paid by word? in school my friend and i had a joke about how he used so many more words than he needed to. i think he dedicates an entire paragraph in one of his books to describing someone knocking on a door.

The fact that he was paid by the word is not a criticism. A great artist can stylistically take advantage of a surplus of words just as another great artist might take advantage of a minimal amount.
