I thought the poem was kind of bad. Also why Shade wrote such a lengthily poem about a guy he had just met and whose story may as well be fake? It would have made more sense of the poem were about getting old and remembering his daughter.

>thinking the poem was written by Shade to be about Kinbote

The only way it was really about Kinbote is if Shade himself was also a fabrication.

>> No.19387877

The poem is about Shade's life. Kinbote is only presenting his interpretation of the poem for his commentary. He both slanders Shade and inserts his fanfiction within the book as he originally intended for Shade to do.

Okay, that makes much more sense, but is it stated anywhere in the book? I don't remember any of that.

It becomes clear with the more outlandish interpretations, the narrator's egomania, the non-sequitur's into extensive stretches of the narrator's life, etc. Then there's the chance the entire thing is a fabrication and the narrator is insane.

Reread it dude. The way he is skipping rather interesting lines because he can't fit them into his narrative makes it clear. By the end of the commentary, he is skipping over nearly 50 lines between each note. (He says the zemblan influence is present only in the 1st canto)

I still don't understand how Kinbote managed to convince Shade's widow to give him the poem.

>> No.19391359

He already had the poem locked in his safe. What Shade's widow gave was the right to publish and comment on it. Through exaggerated reports, Mrs Shade thought Kinbote threw himself in front of the bullet, and with great gratitude gave him the rights.

It's a series of statements in the style of Wittgenstein, typed out by a woman who is alone on earth. There is a sort of narrative.

There is quite some merit to the theory that kinbote is a self destructive/escapist side of the grief-stricken shade even if there are details like botkin that contradict it. Shades fits coinciding with kinbotes arrival, shades dream where he was sleepwalking, the first lines alluding to suicide, kinbote talking about his preferred suicide method being parachuting when he came to america by parachuting, kinbote believing in god, their birthdays being the same...

Written in a partly-made-up language, a bit like A Clockwork Orange. Premise: It's thousands of years after a nuclear war. Civilization has regressed to bronze-age levels and uses a debased form of English including many garbled fragments of old words and phrases no longer understood.
