I'm at Hades and dropping it. I'm not enjoying any of it. I can see the meanings behind meanings thing - probably to state that ordinary life is as epic as an odyssey, loaded with higher meanings (as above so below). But I don't get most of the references and the plot is dull. The prose is fine, I found some brilliant verses here and there. After all I know it's my fault. I'm clearly not prepared to tackle Ulysses - maybe because I'm too young and naive. I know this for sure because The Portrait is the book that touched me the most, so I trust Joyce. I'm just angry at myself for not enjoying it. Reading Ulysses feels like a chore, but not reading it makes me feel as if I'm losing on an incredible joke everybody gets but me.
