19360670 No.19360670 [Reply] [Original]

A question for the Orthodox anons on this board — do you know any good books that introduce one to the Divine Liturgy? This morning I attended my first Divine Liturgy as a inquirer and found it to be very beautiful and different from anything I was familiar with, but at times I think the greater significance or order of things was lost on me. Luckily it was all in English though. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

I don't feel kindship to browns, too large ancestral and cultural differences for me to bother integrate into. Wouldn't mind a slavic one (I'm nordic)

The main issue is that the culture is so different and that the language difference ruins it for me. It was great to attend this this morning and to be able to understand what was being said and all that, plus they were very welcoming and I had old ladies giving me advice and some younger men walking up to greet me. Sadly I have heard many of the more ethnic ones are far more insular. Hopefully you are able to find a good church before long. Right after leaving I wasn’t sure what to think but I think it was a really good experience, it felt very reverent and different from my Protestant experiences as a child

Aerial toll-houses are completely Patristic from what I have read and seen in the Desert Fathers, and St. Athanasius’ biography of St. Anthony, where he sees something remarkably similar. There are numerous other cases that people typically point to as well regarding the toll-house teaching.

Regarding Fr. Seraphim Rose in particular, I pray that he shall get glorification into sainthood in good time. He was instrumental in me coming to Orthodoxy, and his works on nihilism, evolution and similar topics are great and pertinent reads.

Yes and no. In as much as they're a whacky pseudo-heresy that has absolutely nothing to do with the Bible and is a figment of the church, yes. The key difference being that Purgatory is something that Yahweh (or Jesus, or the Holy Spirit, or any of a number of Angels, or Mary, or the Green Man, or Fairies, or Jack Frost, or... Really anything that is supra-human) throws you into after death to work off your sins. Aerial Tollhouses are something that the church sets up that you have to pay the church to let you through. Whereas Purgatory is ultimately beyond man, the Aerial Tollhouses are absolutely human.

It's the sort of zany and whacky orientalism that Rose was really into, that made (and still makes, because LARPers are still in love with them) actual Russians cringe. It's so parochial, so folksy!

I thought is was all good, hell I was even a Russian Orthodox inquirer a week from being a catechumen before leaving. They ask you to do so much shit like fasting, praying, reading, vespers, etc, I literally went insane. I thought I was a saint in the making and it was the best feeling of my life. I left a couple months later after losing all my faith and my life has been complete hell ever since. That's religion for you, I don't know what you were looking for, and the thing is, nobody is forcing you to do these things, I am starting to pray and read the bible bit by bit, my priest adviced me to wait until I developed my faith
a lot more before starting to fast in order to not do it hypocritically in a mechanical fashion. I know I will have to put a lot of work and it is much better than laying in my room doing fuck all and masturbating.

Satanic pagans. The "liturgical calendar" even begins and ends with Mary despite Christ being the Alpha and Omega. We know that Christ is the Alpha and Omega from the book of Revelation. Guess what the one and only book of the New Testament that doesn't get read aloud in "church" is? Guess what that book even outright states within itself? I'll give you a hint...it blesses those who read it aloud and those who hear it being read...

Satanic pagans.

"we swear the Apostles told us that Mary was born without sin and never had sex after Jesus was born and ascended into heaven just like Jesus, but none of that made it into the Bible, they just told us and we remembered".

As someone who has been inquiring myself, I first looked up Orthodox churches near me. And then I decided on one after perusing their websites and finding one that wasn’t predominantly ethnic-based in any way (mostly for my own benefit), and then I emailed the priest with some questions about guidance. He just told me to come to Divine Liturgy, Vespers and similar events when I was able to, so that is what I did. I’m still in the early stages of the process but I plan to keep showing up and then asking the priest more questions to see how I can procede further and possibly become a catechumen. Basically just start attending a good place and go from there it seems like. Check out some books by people like Father Kallistos Ware too. His book “The Orthodox Way” is great

You actually wound up with a total of -25 due to not thinking how fortunate the babushka was to be getting some blessing that she probably needed far worse than (You). Had you properly responded you would have been a net +10 (counting the +5 John's toes) which isn't "as good" as the +15 in the short term, but all humble gratitudes for others getting blessings build up into a separate pool and when they reach the secret quota of Cup Runneth Over they exponentially expand with a sum total x 1000 Lord's Leaven.
