>rip off lawrence of arabia, a princess of mars and the sabres of paradise and replace oil with drugs
>get praised forever by pseuds who think babbys first sci fi novel is the deepest thing ever and the basic message that "AUTHORITY BAD" is somehow deep and intellectual

Why do dune fans defend outright plagarism?

He took far more heavily from Vonnegut, the first two books are just a heavily reworked and expanded Sirens of Titan without the humor.

Well, give us the lines which are direct rip. Quick scan at the only remotely scholarly article I could find on the topic revealed no direct rips, some lines which are likely influenced but that is it.

Not much of a fan, enjoyed the first two books, gave up on the 4th, doubt I will ever reread it. I mostly found it interesting how he developed and reworked Vonnegut, the Lawrence of Arabia influence is much smaller and less direct. I did get caught up in the story some but the remnants of its serial past always ruined that for me, vestigial rehashing, setup, and cliff hangers at the old serial start and end points.
